Our quest to brew the quintessential coffee beer began over a cupping with the coffee gurus from Richmond’s Lamplighter Roasting Company. Their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee was masterfully roasted to highlight the single origin bean’s bright, crisp body and distinctive blueberry undertones, making it harmonize beautifully with our Russian Imperial Stout. May this beer warm your spirits in these brisk winter months.

Growler from the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of coffee, green coffee, ash, bitter chocolate, roasted malts. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, faint ash, bitter hop finish. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness, the ash-note is a bit offputting, but it’s a decent beer.

Draft. Black pour with tan head. Dark roasted and malty aromas. Flavors still lack a bit of coffee from what I was expecting; light roasted and dark malt tones, not bitter or sweet.

Draft at Churchkey. Opaque briwn color, beige head. Aroma of earthy coffee grounds. Taste is coffee, of course, but it retains its beery characteristics. Better body than most coffee beers.

On tap at Ynot, Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA. Black pour with a creamy off-white head. Roasted coffee aroma with faint floral hops. Taste is espresso and dark chocolate with light smoke. Bitterness from the coffee lingers on the palate. A nicely done coffee stout.

750 capped bottle from Whole Foods PM. Pours hazy deep black with 1-finger tan head. Nose is roasty dark malt, cacao, coffee. Intense nose that is a true beauty. Tastes rich, with roasty malt, a heavy but well integrated coffee flavor, mild spicy notes, and some black currant notes. Finishes complex and well balanced. This is an elite example of this style.

750 ml bottle. Pours a deep chocolate color with a thick tan head and little lacing. The smell is that of a smooth Kenyan roasted coffee. The taste is a mix of coffee and sweet fruit that balances nicely. You get roasted earthy flavors with blueberry and a hint of fresh mint. This is a unique coffee stout with a medium body that rolls through the tongue with a silky feel. Just enough coffee bitterness on the end to linger with some of the blueberry. Very good.
