Our quest to brew the quintessential coffee beer began over a cupping with the coffee gurus from Richmondís Lamplighter Roasting Company. Their Ethiopia Sidamo coffee was masterfully roasted to highlight the single origin beanís bright, crisp body and distinctive blueberry undertones, making it harmonize beautifully with our Russian Imperial Stout. May this beer warm your spirits in these brisk winter months.

Growler from the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a thin frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of coffee, green coffee, ash, bitter chocolate, roasted malts. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, faint ash, bitter hop finish. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness, the ash-note is a bit offputting, but itís a decent beer.

From bomber (thx Rob) Pours dark dark dark with tan/brown head. Malt and caramel aroma. Little if any coffee in the aroma. Noticeable yet non-harsh coffee hints along with caramel. Tasted something else fruity but could not place it until I read of the blueberry in the beer. Nice touch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nope. Didnít like it. Watery, thin, bland, Out of all the coffee beers we had it was the worst in my opinion.

another decent enough coffee stout, but at end of day not really that great.

Large Bottle - Dark rich color. Settled like a Guinness and it's nitrogen bubbles. Sweet and creamy flavor. Slight coffee flavor but nothing overpowering. Like other stouts I thing these are best enjoyed at the end of the day after a good meal.

Bottle: Thanks preismj: Served in a Chouffe glass: Medium sized light brown foamy head on top of a black colored beer. First time aroma was only baby diapers and some berries, but after some time thereís more. Yes, thereís coffee, some bay leaf, roast, dark chocolate and prunes. Flavours of oatmeal, prunes, some coffee, malt roast, some bay leaf, hint of raisin, some caramel, some dark chocolate, hay and herbal roast, rye, yeast, mocha and bitters. Aftertaste is bitter, sticky, oat and coffee, some prunes and raisin and some malt roast. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, medium to fuller bodied and a creamy sticky texture. Expected more, not bad but with different top coffee stouts this one falls out of the boat.

Location: 750 ml bottle shared by my Dad, 5/2/14

Aroma: The nose is sweetened coffee, some roasted malts, and plenty of chocolate
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a small brown head and some mild lace
Flavor: The flavor is fairly sweet, coffee and chocolate, with some alcohol, and light roast
Palate: The body is medium, it is smoothish, with average carbonation, and a slightly sticky finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a solid, sweet example of this style, but I have found enjoyable ones that were this sweet before. Good stuff. Looking forward to trying the bourbon version.

Bottle poured into snifter. Aroma of bitter roast coffee and the faintest hint of fruit. Taste is roast coffee and stale coffee. Bit of a bitter oxidized flavor as it warms.

Good coffee stout. Not too strong on the coffee, but nice subtle blend. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. 2014 vintage. Pours a pitch black with three fingers of mocha foam. Nose is sweet and bitter coffee and roasted malts. Taste is rich coffee with a bit too much bitterness on the end. Roasty and smooth with dry chocolate. Creamy mouth feel. Overall this is a really solid beer.

Rich deep dark brown coloured body with a large, microfoamed light brown head, about three centimetres tall. All with virtually no light getting through at an angle - about 99% opaque - I canít imagine this looking any better. Aroma of earth, hops, alcohol, prunes, metal, vanilla, medicine and a hint of coffee - not much though. Medium to Full-bodied; Deep assertive roasted malt at first with a noticeable hit of bourbon and oak with some nice sugars behind and showing some depth, all with a bit of coffee bitterness at the end. Aftertaste shows a silky malt, some rich coffee flavours and a lot of still pungent sweetness which dominates the finish, along with alcohol. Overall, a beer that is still working out and I wish I left it for another year, but this makes me feel good about aging their other beers. A good beer for sure with a nice profile and great complexity - very nice to sample! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Tysonís Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 28-January-2014 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on a day of more snow, 03-March-2014.
