COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
West Coast Style IPA. Bold, resinous and bursting with bright grapefruit aroma, this IPA is a tribute to the decades of hard work by conservationists to restore the James River as a bounty of vibrant aquatic life, eco-friendly recreational activity, and in our case, fresh brewing water. These efforts have culminated recently with the symbolic return of the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a prehistoric, yet majestic behemoth of a fish, spotted as far up the James River as the fall line in Richmond. Your purchase of this beer supports the James River Association. Thank you for being a part of The Great Return. In our commitment to James River conservation, Hardywood will contribute $10 per barrel of The Great Return to The James River Association, to support their mission to be the guardian of the James River. The JRA’s core programs include Watershed Restoration, Education and Outreach, River Advocacy and the Riverkeeper Program.

Tall can at home. Pours lightly hazy orange with a large, frothy and rocky off-white head, medium to long retention with good lacing. Aroma is pine, citrus and floral hops, biscuit and cracker malt with pear and apple esters. Some late dank and earthy hops hit the nose. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, light crisp malt, light fruity esters with a dry and prickly finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

Can shared at Ed5388’s several weeks ago. Aroma of citrus, pineapple, wet hops, touch of apricot. Medium to fuller mouthfeel, stronger carbonation and a lingering bitter bite. Flavor of vanilla, grapefruit, apricot, toast and wet hops. Good stuff here.

Fantastic IPA. Love getting a big west coast flavor from Virginia, this beer has become an IPA staple!

Appearance- cloudy, copper, burnt amber. Nice frothy bone white head that remains for a good bit and laces nicely. Smell- citrus, malt, and pine. Taste- big and bitter up front, eases into spiced pepper finish. Mouthfeel- medium bodied. Semi smooth. Overall- a good to very good IPA. Won’t overly wow you, but definitely shouldn’t displease, either. Solid marks all around. Each time I tasted, I wanted to give greater praise, but found myself holding back. Still, don’t let that stop you. Bottom line: enjoyed it very much, and will be purchasing again. Cheers all!

Super hazy deep copper and orange tinted body with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head - this looks like it came right from a tap on the West Coast. Aroma of grapefruit, piney, citrus and slightly resinous hops with a good malt backbone and a touch of apricot sweetness. Medium-bodied; Biting grapefruit and citrus hops with a milder malt backbone than expected showing some grain and cardboard, but the fruit comes out at the end. Aftertaste shows bits of apricot and pears, but the hop bite is present, if slightly underwhelming. Overall, a nice IPA with a solid hop profile, but a little lighter malt body than expected and some subdued and mild tertiary flavours make for a good, but not great beer. I sampled this sixteen ounce can purchased from Whole Foods in Tyson’s Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 06-February-2014 for US$3.69 sampled at home in Washington on 20-May-2014.

Can. Generally, this brewer has a positive vibe in the region, and my limited exposure has all been positive. But this was a bit of a disappointment. The beer is light amber as you’d expect with a toss-n-tumble topping. Overall I found this quite woody and outdoorsy, vice citric, generally a drinkable quaff ... but the finish was almost soapy, and this detergent factor - although subtle - wouldn’t leave me. 16oz can thanks to Dan P. Pours a hazy orange color with a thin foamy off white head. Aroma of sweet citrus, caramel malt, lemons, and lots of ripe pineapple. Taste of citrus, grapefruit zest, pine, and caramel malt.

Like the beaux this has a great initial hop aroma but doesn’t quite follow through. In a sense, there is no great return here. Pours amber with decent head and lacing on cask. Floral and light citrus aroma. Finishes with light sweetness but a light astringent discord. Cask at Churchkey.

On cask at ChurchKey DC. Pours a clear copper with an ecru head. Fruity nose. Flavors of pine and citrus with an alfalfa finish. Bitter finish.
