West Coast Style IPA. Bold, resinous and bursting with bright grapefruit aroma, this IPA is a tribute to the decades of hard work by conservationists to restore the James River as a bounty of vibrant aquatic life, eco-friendly recreational activity, and in our case, fresh brewing water. These efforts have culminated recently with the symbolic return of the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a prehistoric, yet majestic behemoth of a fish, spotted as far up the James River as the fall line in Richmond. Your purchase of this beer supports the James River Association. Thank you for being a part of The Great Return. In our commitment to James River conservation, Hardywood will contribute $10 per barrel of The Great Return to The James River Association, to support their mission to be the guardian of the James River. The JRA’s core programs include Watershed Restoration, Education and Outreach, River Advocacy and the Riverkeeper Program.

Can from a friend. Poured a clear copper-orange color with a moderate off-white head that faded to a dense layer and left beautiful sheets of lacing. Aroma of fresh, dank hops paired with bright citrus fruit (grapefruit, orange) along with some moderate notes of pine. Smooth entry leads immediately into a fresh, floral, resin-filled hoppiness with a complementary citrus fruitiness in the form of grapefruit and softer orange that linger into the bitter finish where undertones of a sweet caramel maltiness are present. Moderate carbonation and medium mouth feel, incredibly drinkable due to the dryness imparted by the hops. Overall, a great beer if you are looking for a hop-forward, easy-drinking treat...which is exactly what they were shooting for.

Poured from a tap at Monarch Grill. Creamy yet frothy head that doesn?t look like it?s going anywhere. Somewhat cloudy red color. Strong grapefruit aroma. Bold taste, but not as bitter as I assumed it would be. This is a good beer.

Good stuff. Definitely a lot of citrus, like a ton of grapefruit on this one. Nice hoppy bitterness with excellent balance. I’m definitely gonna try to find this one on tap it’s excellent.

Can from Vintage Cellar, Blacksburg VA. Pours slightly hazy, nice head. Aroma of West coast hops, some sweet malt. Malt increases as beer warms. Very nice take on the style from a newish east coast brewery. Alcohol is well-hidden.

Pint can that came from Nate as a Christmas gift. A big creamy beige head leaves sticky lace. The beer is very clear amber. An aroma that is full of citrus and pine. Flavor, too. Big robust hops. The bitterness is moderate and there is some astringency. Crackery malts. Resin. Those hops are active and work well together and carry this one into the winner’s circle.

FROTHINGSLOSH (5136) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 25, 2014
Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a dark amber color with an enormous soapy orange-white head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was tangy sour caramel, pine, resin and a bit of lemon. The flavor was bitter pine, resin, tangy malts and sour caramel. Medium length finish. Medium body. Meh.

Can from capones. Pours hazy amber with minimal head. The carbonation on this seems low. The aroma is all citrus. Tons of grapefruit juice with a touch of pine. The taste is big grapefruit juice, sweet, then followed by a strong bitterness. Very nice, strong bitter finish of medium duration.

Pours a gold/Orange color with some decent lacing. Smells very good. Strong aroma of grapefruit and citrus hops. Tastes almost sweet at first, with citrus at the front and quickly changing to heavy bitter notes in the end.

Pours a hazy orange colour with nice white lacing and head. Nice grapefruit aroma, really nice. Tastes a little lacking upfront, but then there is a major citrus pine hop kick. Not bad.
