West Coast Style IPA. Bold, resinous and bursting with bright grapefruit aroma, this IPA is a tribute to the decades of hard work by conservationists to restore the James River as a bounty of vibrant aquatic life, eco-friendly recreational activity, and in our case, fresh brewing water. These efforts have culminated recently with the symbolic return of the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a prehistoric, yet majestic behemoth of a fish, spotted as far up the James River as the fall line in Richmond. Your purchase of this beer supports the James River Association. Thank you for being a part of The Great Return. In our commitment to James River conservation, Hardywood will contribute $10 per barrel of The Great Return to The James River Association, to support their mission to be the guardian of the James River. Can from a friend. Poured a clear copper-orange color with a moderate off-white head that faded to a dense layer and left beautiful sheets of lacing. Aroma of fresh, dank hops paired with bright citrus fruit (grapefruit, orange) along with some moderate notes of pine. Smooth entry leads immediately into a fresh, floral, resin-filled hoppiness with a complementary citrus fruitiness in the form of grapefruit and softer orange that linger into the bitter finish where undertones of a sweet caramel maltiness are present. Moderate carbonation and medium mouth feel, incredibly drinkable due to the dryness imparted by the hops. Overall, a great beer if you are looking for a hop-forward, easy-drinking treat...which is exactly what they were shooting for.

This brew is a clear orange-copper color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, grapefruit and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of floral hops, citrus and roast malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrusy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Can at Frank’s. Pours an amber body with white lacing. Aroma is pretty bland - lots of malt, vague bitter hops. Mouthfeel is medium to light with ntoes of sweet caramel malt, light metallic character, spice and vague bitter hops.

Impromptu ipa tasting thanks to will. Sticky though not overly hoppy.... Grapefruit, pine, resin aroma and taste, fairly strong caramel malt backbone.

one of the last beers I tried at the tasting. Poured red orange with small to medium head and lacing. Notes were soap, bitter hops, malt, and caramel. Just not a whole lot going on in this one. Medium body and carbonation.

Darker golden amber. Medium off-white head. Spotty lacing. Modest citric and tropical notes. Fairly muddled and mutes. Medium to full bodied, a bit sweet. Less than i’d expect from an IPA.

Can. Pours orange with white head. Aroma is hops, pine. Taste is bitter, more pine, a bit sweet, bitterness lingers. Not a huge hop taste, but it is a bit old. Still tasty though.

Thanks Max! 16 oz can into a pint glass. Canned 1/24/14. Pours an ever so hazy dark amber with two fingers of stubborn fluffy white foam. Nose is pretty standard west coast; bitter grapefruit and pine into smooth malts. Taste is predominantly piney with some bitter citrus and bread. Awkward bitterness on the finish. Creamy and full mouth feel. A really solid beer here but nothing amazing. Wouldn’t mind crushing tallboys of these at all.

Poured from a 16oz can I got in a trade, thanks Devin. Aroma is citrus, pine, and grapefruit. Flavors are citrus, pine, grapefruit, and a light caramel malt. The beer is very tasty, hop forward but not really bitter. It would be cool to have this on tap sometime.
