This is yet another original flagship brew and of the English persuasion. Our brewer does love his dark beers and decided to brew this slightly unheralded style. Porters, related to stouts, come in two basic styles: Brown and Robust. Robust styles tend to be heavier, stronger and even slightly darker. Brown Porters tend to be more drinkable as a session brew. Our Puget Sound Porter is a lovely dark Brown with strong hints of ruby. A wonderful coffee roasted and chocolate nose makes this Porter unique and enhances the medium bodied brew. The flavors of coffee and chocolate follow through each sip of this porter. 8 different malted barley’s, including Pale Chocolate and dark German barley make up the grist. Two hop additions balance the beer’s flavor. Our brewers 2nd favorite child! GABF Gold in 1999 5.4% ABV and 40 IBUs.

On tap at the brew pub. Dark brown pour with a light brown head. Sweet chocolate malt aromas. Smooth and creamy with bitter dark roasted malt and expresso highlights. A bit astringent. Good body and mouthfeel.

Bottle. Black pour, beige head. Interesting aroma - chocolate, lactose, fairly sweet with a little funky earthiness. Flavour is the same, a thin palate. Good flavour, a bit different, but kind of watery.

Black body. Some head and lacing. Cocoa nesquick aroma. Coffee crisp. The flavour falls a bit flat and palate a bit thin. Earthy. Okay.

I purchased this bottle from Breeze In, Juneau, Alaska and am reviewing this from notes. I poured this into a pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one and a half fingered white to off white foamy head that rises a bit and then dies leaving a nice milky to creamy looking thick foamy lacing. The smell was nice and roasty coffee to having a decent light chocolate settling over the aroma. The taste was bitter to roasty and ended up leaving a decent roasty bitter coffee to chocolate aftertaste with a dry bitter finish. On the palate, it sits about a light to medium with a decent harsh carbonation settling over the mouth and tongue as well as indicating a somewhat decent sessionability about it. Overall, I say this is a good American Porter well worthy of having again.

Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head on there. Nose is roasty with a fair amount of coffee and just a hint of chocolate to it. Taste is actually a little bitter, and very slightly sour. Has some baltic porter characteristics, though not enough to represent that style.

Pours a finger and half of tan head on a black body. The aroma is mostly roasted malt and burnt wood, really nice. The flavor is balanced and deep, roasted malt, burnt malt, charred wood, and mild bitter finish. The texture is smooth with low to moderate carbonation. An outstanding porter.
