The head is impressive even with a soft pour. Excellent lace. The color is dark, dark brown, nearly a stout.
Strong chocolate malt aromas with just a touch of smokey peat. There are also notes of ground coffee.
The smoke comes through without overpowering the malt...but it is close. I like the presence of the hop, particularly on the swallow. A complex set of flavors that ebb and flow with the tasting. Full-bodied and properly carbonated, this is a beer with complete package. Very worthwhile to seek out.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
A: The pour is a dark brown color with a little bit of reddish tint and a thin layer of off-white head.
S: A light roasted malt aroma with only a light smoke note to it. There are some nice chocolate aromas with a little bit of metal to it. Sort of a bland nose.
T: The smoked malt is fairly mild. A touch of smoked salmon, maybe a bit of wood. Light chocolate flavor with a decent amount of roasted malt. A bit watery.
M: On the light side of medium with a medium carbonation.
O: I found how to make a smoked beer palatable: age it for several years.

Poured an almost opaque brown with a copper edge and beige head. Fairly smoky with a nice smooth roast making up the aroma and the flavor. Light semi-dry finish. Nice beer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a thin white head. Aroma of smoke and roasted malt. Smoke isn’t too big here, as it can be. Taste is smokey with a little bit of malt/chocolate sweetness. Body is lighter than normal for this type of brew.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark brown with tan head. Smokey aroma like bacon. Smokey taste. Smoke is the overpowering factor in this beer. But still a very enjoyable unique porter.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, 5.4%. Smoky and cardboardy aroma. Very dark brown colour with a red shine, seems clear. Very small, bubbly light brown head. The flavour is nicely smoked, subtly, but still distinct. A sort of woody charcoal smoke. The aftertaste has more smoke, getting a bit more towards salami, and with some goat flavour. Thin mouthfeel, but this suits the beer fine. One-dimensional, but I like it a lot.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. A dark brown beer with a reddish tint and an off-white head. Mocha, chocolate, coffee, some sourish notes and a dryish touch in the aroma. Not much smoke detected there, but sure fine. Chocolate, mocha and a sour touch in the flavor, finishing with a lasting roastyness. Full to medium body. A nice beer, but they should have used more smoked malt I think. (071123)

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Foam Rangers January meeting. Crisp darkened brown with big head. Basic roasted malts, coffee and smoke, but somehow I feel they don’t integrate well. The flavor is a little flabby for me and overall not that impressive.
