Bottle. Pours black/brown with a tan head that left good rings of lace. Aroma was roasty & malty with chocolate and coffee. Flavor was slightly sweet with bitter chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, light caramel, a bit of smoke and had some mineral notes with a dry and roasty finish. A decent stout

Sweet roast and molasses aroma with some sweet cream and dark chocolate. Opaque brown-black with clear, ruddy brown highlights and a lasting, thin, light brown cover. Sweet and roasty vanilla and hazelnutty mocha flavour with a moderate bitterness. Balance toward sweet, with a dark brown sugar finish and notes of liquorice. Medium to full body, moderate to medium carbonation, sweet, nutty and dark molasses finish.

My first time trying an oyster stout; I have become a fan. This beer was smooth and had wonderful balanced flavors. The roasted malt and coffee beans paired well with the earthy, flinty mineral flavors that the oysters added to the beer. The mild bitter hops in the finish balanced the beer very well.

Split bottle with SHERM1016...thanks! Pours almost black with thin head. Very smooth and creamy...sounds a little intimidating (oysters...really?) but this went very well with, well, oysters! Chocolate is in there as is some well roasted malts. Excellent; tasty!

22oz bottle split with dwm1034. #30. Pours a deep, dark brown color with a light tan head. Aroma is roasty, smokey. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, chocolate, roasted malt, a little mineral, with a sweet chocolate. Tasty, enjoyed with oysters.

I wasn’t sure what to think with oysters being in the ingredients. The aroma became more pronounced as I made it through the bottle and it was a combination of roasted grains and sand. There was a mineral quality too, which I guess is what was suggested on the label. The color was very dark with very little light getting through. It had a nice two-finger head. The taste was pleasant and complimented the nose quite well. I detected a slight smokiness as well. I know they’ve brewed two batches of this, so if Harpoon decides to give it another try I’ll pick up another bottle.

Tasting at Papsø’s, as #36 - Island Creek Oyster Stout
Dark mahogany color, almost black, with red shades; medium sized beige head. Aroma of wet cardboard, paper, some roasted malts. Roasted malt flavor, caramel, dryish, a bit salty, with some dark chocolate. Correct bitterness. Pleasant.

Bottle. Moderate ot heavy malt aromas of dark bread, toasted and strong coffee, light to moderate herbs and resin for the hops, moderate earth for the yeast with wood, cola and alcohol in the background, Head is average size, creamy, light brown with someslippery lacing and good legs, and is almost fully diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts slightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, watery with a lively carbonation and a clean crisp finish. Deep and rich aroma, light and semi-refreshing flavor and mouthfeel in this Sweet Stout.

22 ounce bottle pours a dark black color, aroma of chocolate, chalk, light ash, and a touch of dark fruit. Flavors are the same and a touch creamy, with a roasty finish.

Originally reviewed: 5/27/11. This is "100 Barrel Series" #36. This is my first "Oyster Stout," so I’m excited to give it a try. 22oz bottle, split with my wife. Poured my allotment into a tall chalice.
Pours a dark black (surprise) with a finger-width beige head. Wispy lace stuck to the glass after each sip. Nothing in the nose told me that this was anything other than a standard stout -- dark roasted malts, charred wood, coffee grounds. Nice nose. The body was a little on the thin side. Though the ABV is lower, I still expected a bit more heft to this. Mild cocoa on the tongue, toasted malts, light hop bite. Not sure what the oysters add to this as I can’t seem to find any aspect that’s different than any other standard stout I’ve had. Pretty average, not that that’s a bad thing.
