3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 superspak (1469) - Michigan, USA - MAY 31, 201222 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 5/15/2012. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some decent lacing on the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, orange, pine, herbal, citrus rind, roasted malt, biscuit, toast, and earthy spiciness. Very nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, pine, orange, herbal, floral, grass, dark roasted malt, char, citrus rind, chocolate, and earthy spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pine, toast, grass, roasted malt, chocolate, char, and earthy spices on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of roasted malt with hop flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is a really nice and quite robust Black IPA. Nice balance of citrus and piny hop flavors; with a very nice and prominent roasted malt backbone. Really well done, and very enjoyable.

A good more seasionable take on the style. Some lemon citrus aromas. Medium bodied and bittersweet roasty malt flavor up front. Fades into some more bitter his and the finish is slight cocoa and bittersweet coffee again. Left with a light sweetness.

Bottle. Nearly black with a beige head. Spicy and earthy hops with dark chocolate in the aroma. Bitter, but mostly dark espresso and chocolate notes in the flavor. Lighter to medium body. Not terrible but not what I expect fromo the style.

On tap. Pours a deep black with a white head and lacing. It has a medium aroma of dark malt and earthy hops. The flavor is toasty dark malt up front with a more hoppy middle and semi-bitter aftertaste over a medium body.

Very black pour. Medium white head. Porter like aroma. Toasty. Some charcoal. And a little bit of citrusy hop aroma. Flavor is very similar in profile. Toasty. Charcoal. Hop flavor comes through more. More earthy and spicy. Sweet finish.

Ash. Thats what I think of when I drink this beer. The infusion didn’t really come through to me. It just tastes like a burnt stout/porter. Slight fruity aroma. Not very strong. A hopped roasted ale with ipa scent. Meh

Bottle->SA. Deep brown with thick foamy offwhite head. Aroma has citrus hops, spices and minerals. Flavor is more pronounced earthy spices and some flat hops. Pretty good.

Not my favorite back IPA (21st Amendment), but not bad. Nice dark roast with notes of coffee. Mouth feel is a bit weak and hop presence could use some work.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Scrapersnbeer (977) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 31, 2013
Aroma is chocolate cake and hidden hops. Near black schwarzbier appearance. Black coffee that is moderately bitter, though not dry, on finish. Light on the body for this style, feels more like a traditional IPA. Harpoon does good stuff, not really blown away here though.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 PhatB420 (468) - Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA - JAN 20, 2013
12oz into a pint. Instnat cola color, remains the whole time. Taste is dark, hoppy, black lager ish, and does not carry a lingering dry afterbite some black ipas do. enjoyable but could be better with even a more plentiful hop kick or malt boast. The ride is easy with the almost perfect ahtanum strong hold, this is a nice brew.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Stldsf1 (557) - Florida, USA - JAN 20, 2013
Pour is straight black. Thin head. Roasted malts and coffee dominate. Hops are almost nonexistent. Not my favorite black ipa by any means.
