Several years ago a few Harpoon employees thought it would be fun to start up an annual company homebrew competition here at the brewery. Anyone who wanted to brew a beer could, and the winning beer would be determined by popular vote based on a blind sampling at our annual company outing at our brewery in Windsor, VT. The first year there were about a dozen entries from Harpooners in every department. In 2013 there were more than 30. The winning beer is now brewed as a 100 Barrel Series offering. So, after a heated contest, Harpoon Citra Victorious, brewed by Merrill Allen, Jessie Cox, Shannon Cudmore, Liz Melby, and Carolyn Orth, under the guidance of brewers Charlie Cummings and Brian Martyniak, came out…well, victorious. Congratulations to this year’s Harpoon Kettle Cup winners!

Citra hops provide a juicy citrus character while Chico yeast yields a fruity aroma in this grapefruit-infused pale ale. The combination of Maris Otter, Pale, and C60 malt adds depth and a touch of sweetness and gives the beer its rich bronze color and medium body. The finish is all citrus. Dry hopped with Citra and Cascade and loaded with 96 pounds of grapefruit peel, Harpoon Citra Victorious is easygoing with a momentous citrus kick.

Bottle shared at Max’s. Pours a light orange amber body with white lacing. Aroma is stale hop - unfortunately this seems to be past its ’enjoy by’ date. Mouthfeel is light and carbonated with notes of oranges, grapefruit, spice, clean malt, light herbal character and soap. The hop profile is super muted at this point, but would definitely like to try again if fresh.

Draft at Beer Run, 8/23/14. Pours a hazy copper with a thin creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of citrus, tropical, pine hops, caramel and mildly doughy malt. The taste is citrus, tropical hops and mild caramel. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness.

Bottle offered @ gmellison via trade. A bit hazy yellow orange appearance with an off white head. Bright grapefruit, tangerine citrusy aroma. Nice body. Pretty juicy. Lots of fruit. Slightly floral. Decent brew.

Pours a bright orange-gold color with a medium foamy eggshell white head that recedes gradually. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, hops and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of grapefruit, grassy hops and biscuit malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a lingering citrusy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle from oh hell I forget. Pours a slightly hazy deep golden color with a huge bubbly frothy white head that shows great retention. Earthy resinous citrusy aromas dominate the nose with a light bready maltiness deep underneath. The flavor follows the aroma but the bitter pithy grapefruit is much more evident. Light mineral water with a moderate amount of bitterness from the peel as well as the hops. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Smells wonderful, tastes pretty good but the raw grapefruit flavors got to me a bit over time.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2014 Sampled on draft at Dad’s Pub this beer poured a dark orange-amber color with a medium sized foamy orange-tan head that lingered but left no lacing. The aroma was strong tangy lemon, grapefruit and perfume. The flavor was semi-sweet and tart with notes of lemon, grapefruit, pine, perfume and a faint caramel undertone. Medium length finish. Light to medium body. Solid.

Appearance is pretty standard pale ale, maybe a little bit more on the coppery side with a tan head and a little haze clouding things up. The aroma can roll with some of the nation’s best. Citrus of course, I’m not a huge fan of grapefruit (the fruit) but this smells amazing! Quite sweet in the mouth with more citrus and some toffee. Lingering bitterness, but seems like the kind you get from eating grapefruit rather than hops. Maybe it’s both? Good stuff from Harpoon, some of the best I’ve had from them.

Aroma smells like fresh cut grapefruit! Head is lacy white with medium retention. Taste is effervescent with a pleasing sour red grapefruit taste. Not much lingering bitterness. Awesome beer if you like grapefruit. It is a fresh fruit taste that is very different from the grapefruit taste Citra hops typically impart into a beer.

New beer distributors, new York 650 ml ($7): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, resin, and a light malt backbone. Taste is very citrus. There is not only grapefruit, but also other fruits like some lemon. Well balanced, but still hop forward.

Dark orange. Nose is dank with hints of leather and pee. Very resinous taste. Lots of dank woody tree fruit and tangerine. A bit too harsh.
