Several years ago a few Harpoon employees thought it would be fun to start up an annual company homebrew competition here at the brewery. Anyone who wanted to brew a beer could, and the winning beer would be determined by popular vote based on a blind sampling at our annual company outing at our brewery in Windsor, VT. The first year there were about a dozen entries from Harpooners in every department. In 2013 there were more than 30. The winning beer is now brewed as a 100 Barrel Series offering. So, after a heated contest, Harpoon Citra Victorious, brewed by Merrill Allen, Jessie Cox, Shannon Cudmore, Liz Melby, and Carolyn Orth, under the guidance of brewers Charlie Cummings and Brian Martyniak, came out…well, victorious. Congratulations to this year’s Harpoon Kettle Cup winners!

Citra hops provide a juicy citrus character while Chico yeast yields a fruity aroma in this grapefruit-infused pale ale. The combination of Maris Otter, Pale, and C60 malt adds depth and a touch of sweetness and gives the beer its rich bronze color and medium body. The finish is all citrus. Dry hopped with Citra and Cascade and loaded with 96 pounds of grapefruit peel, Harpoon Citra Victorious is easygoing with a momentous citrus kick.

Drank at harpoon brewery, hoppy aroma, amber color with tan head. Can taste the citra hops through it

Bottle to tulip. Hazy orange, thin white head. Nose is grapefruit and... must? If this were wine, I’d start wondering about it being corked. Taste is a nice, robust ale, with modest bitterness. Grapefruit comes through primarily on the finish, and aftertaste fades from fruit to a more bitter pith. A mix of nice, drinkable ale with some odd, less than pleasant aspects (nose and aftertaste).

Bottle to pint glass. Appearance: very bright gold color. Full white head settled into a lady sheen. Aroma: citrus and hops, light grass or gay. Subdued, subtle. Taste: lemon grapefruit. Slight hops. Cane sugar. Very yummy. Feel. Very much alive. Incredibly well balanced and drinkable. About to wash down my curried chicken salad on a biscuit. A really nice refreshing beer. Perfect on a nice day with lunch. This would be a great beer at the beach.

Pours a light copper from a bottle. Aroma is a citrusy hoppiness, I’ll admit to never having been aware of the flavor profile of Citra hops, but you can pick up the dry hopped Cascades a bit on the nose. The grapefruit cited in the description is almost nonexistent, I feel like I only pick up on it when I burp. A nice balanced sweetness, not too bitter, but good hoppy flavor. A good beer, a nice representative of the style.

Deep amber pour with a thin white head. The nose is a bit sweet and some odd pale crystal malt sweetness. Has a little bit of a citrusy character and a touch of iced tea. The hops are fairly light and kind of odd. Moderately hoppy and a little bit fruity as well. Has a touch of caramel. Decent but not the greatest use of Citra hops.

Bottle... Pours clear and amber with a small, white head that’s gone faster than you can say “quick.” The aroma is an unfortunate blend of cat pee, funky armpit and pine sap. Medium-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and lively carbonation. The flavor displays nice balance. Tasty and bitter. Thin but nice. The pungent nose ruins the experience for me. 2014-12-09. Dark orange body nice beige head. 3+ Aroma has an interesting savoury quality I can’t quite place over mild fruit and grain character. Flavour is cereally caramel malt, pleasantly fruity hops, nice citrus notes but the grainy malts dominate over the otherwise lovely hops. Average plus bodied palate, good carbonation. Meh, okay but but far too malty for my tastes. Bottle shared by JoeMcPhee.

Fresh hop aromas, citrus, pine, tropical fruit. Slightly hazy orange-gold, somewhat lasting white head. Dry, decent bitterness, crackery malts. Light bodied.

Good sized light orange head of fine and dense bubbles. Reduces slowly to a rocky top dense head of foam. Light citrus, fresh tobacco, some oranges and mint. Color is a medium dirty orange. Light and bitter flavor with more mint, oranges, cereal grains and biscuity malts. Finishes with a light lingering bitterness and some fresh herbal flavors. An ok pale ale.

Juicy notes of citrus and sweet fruit meet the nose, while a cloudy amber pour produces a thin non-lasting off-white head and minimal lacing. The taste is dominately grapefruit along with hints of fruit sweetness and malts. A nice bitter fnish which extends into a long aftertaste. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, this brew lives up to its name providing a crisp and very refreshing taste experience.
