A hearty malt base is complemented by sweet cherry juice and cocoa nibs added during fermentation in this decadent take on a traditional porter. Bomber from Village Liquors in Franklin. Pours out jet black with a frothy tan head that settles to a nice lace. Aroma and flavors of chocolate and cherry. Smooth and very drinkable. Reminds me a lot of Three Philosophers, but a slightly thinner body and more pronounced chocolate-cherry flavors. Finish is of bittersweet cocoa.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2014 vintage bottling. Pours fairly pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, lightly tart cherry, cocoa, toast, dark bread, roasted malt, brown sugar, light coffee, raisin, plum, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted/bready malt, cherry, and light-moderate yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, lightly tart cherry, cocoa, toast, dark bread, roasted malt, brown sugar, light coffee, raisin, plum, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cherry, cocoa, toast, dark bread, roasted malt, brown sugar, light coffee, raisin, plum, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/roasted/bready malt, cherry, and fruity yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/fruitiness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good imperial English porter style. All around good balance and complexity of dark/roasted/bready malt, cherry, and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. I would have liked a bit more cherry presence; but as an general English imperial porter, it was very enjoyable overall.

Bottle, 22oz, at Haand Festival -14. A clear, dark brown beer topped by a small, off-white head. Licorice, chocolate, dried fruits and some coffee and berry hints on the nose. It’s lighlty warming on the palate, full-bodied and soft, with flavors of coffee, chocolate, dried fruits and some alcohol. And a nice hoppy bitterness. Lasting finish with the malty flavors dominating. A sort of one-dimensional beer, still quite complex and indeed nice. 140523

Chocolate and cherry makes for a great dessert beer. Licorice and a hint of tartness keep this from just being a novelty.
