3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from the Harpoon IPA-mix pack. Pours out a deep russet brown with a light tan head that sticks around a while. Light hoppy and roasty aromas. Flavor is plenty malty with a bitter hop backbone. Not overdone. Quite drinkable with a light sticky bitter finish.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I really liked this one...I find many American microbrewed IPA’s, especially ones with this high an ABV, tend to be too heavy for me, but this beer was surprisingly light. Overall character was more stout-like than IPA...more like a heavily hopped stout. Hops are citrusy and slightly piney. Some roast in the aroma but not overwhelming; there’s a hint of a creamy, vanilla-like aroma, emerging then vanishing beneath the fresh, hoppy aroma. Initial flavor is subdued. Finish is quite dry but without being overwhelming bitter. Very pleasant, and my favorite beer yet which has been labelled a black IPA, although among hoppy dark beers I still prefer the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Probably my favorite beer yet from Harpoon, which usually brews beers I find good, but less interesting.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled during CBC 2013. Almost black pour with a small tan head. Light hop aroma, some citrus and fruitiness, bits of chocolate, not too roasty. Lighter flavor, but not offensive, mild citrus and fruity hops, a touch of roasted malt, chocolate. Not awful.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted as part of a flight. Coffee on the nose, pours rich brown color, light head and lace, a little tangy mid-taste, but not the big IPA hop bite you might expect. Long finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Mild hop aroma, with a touch of roast. Pours a clear dark brownish-red, with a thin off-white head. Nice hop bite, with the roast coming through in the finish. Light bodied, slightly slick mouthfeel. Not a bad beer at all, nothing spectacular, but very drinkable.
