COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve been brewing in Boston for 26 years, and have always enjoyed the mix of great beer and good friends that Boston’s pub culture inspires. Hopefully we’ve helped create that combination here at the Brewery as well, but the Irish pub may have been one of the first inspirations, and we wanted to pay tribute to it.

The development of Boston Irish Stout was quite a learning experience as we not only needed to come up with a recipe we liked, but had to learn how to nitrogenate beer on a large scale and package it properly. There were a few bumps in the road as we went along, but thankfully we could always drink our mistakes. Of course, it is also fun to see the tap attached to the bright beer tank (the tank we package out of). We need to sample pints out of the tank prior to packaging because it’s the only sure way to confirm that the beer is going to pour correctly when it is put in the keg. Quality control is a tough job at the brewery!

Description
Boston Irish Stout is a traditional dry Irish stout. Full-bodied but sessionable with a creamy texture (derived from the nitro pour), it combines the roasted character of six malts with delicate Willamette hops.

Looks a like like Guinness but doesn’t taste anywhere near as good. Has a funky aftertaste.

Had a sample while visiting harpoon brewery. Very light bodied for a stout on nitro. Decent but didn’t blow me away.

Pours a dark black with brown head after a long settle. Has a light chocolate and coffee aroma. Tastes like a very watered down Guinness. Has a light chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt taste. Not much of an aftertaste.

16 fl. oz. on tap @ Stoddard’s. Pours very dark red with a medium extremely thick off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts. Flavor is dry roasted malts with notes of coffee and chocolate. Good stuff. Quite Guinnessy.

Pours a rich sable with a very thick, fine-bubbled tan head, very Guinness-like. Aroma has strong, mouth-watering tones of roast malt mad molasses with a hint of coffee. Flavor echoes the roast malt and coffee tones of e aroma, though not as strongly, and adds a snip of caramel. Texture is fairly smooth and thick, dusty and not too fizzy. If not Guinness, still a good brew.

On tap at Barracuda Tavern, Boston. Not much nose at all on this, though it looked the goods, a tar black body topped with a creamy head of whipped cream. Palate was surprisingly thin, and quite dry. Flavors of dark chocolate, rich dark malt, and espresso. A bit hoppy in the finish? A little underwhelmed by this, probably because it was a surprise, but still went down nice with my lobster roll.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2015 Nitro, flight. Dark brown, clear, forever lasting head. Medium body, austere, lean texture, simple flavor profile, below avg length, watery finish. Dry, medium bitter but enough to brighten mouthfeel which would otherwise be flat, bitter aftertaste. Dark roast flavor, ashy, monochromatic, watered down and that’s it. Nothing in it for me.
