COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

Description
A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

12oz Bottle, purchased at Wakefield Liquors - Wakefield, RI. Distinct boiled hershey’s syrup aroma right at the beginning, followed by a gentle movement of roast and chocolate malt. Pours a brown-black, with plenty of soapy bamboo-colored head. Flavors give off more of that canned, cooked, corn-based, hershey’s flavor that I find off-putting. Wasn’t expecting it, just hoping for a chocolatey-tasting stout. In the end, that overriding character and the general flaccidness of this beer make it undesirable for the style.

Bottle. Opaque black, creamy head. Chocolate aroma, milk chocolate and fudge notes, sweet maple siruo, a hint peanut, light bitterchoc finish. Pleasant desert, chewy and mellow.

I had this beer a while back and from what I can remember I enjoyed it. I’ve had this at the pub/brewery so it was fresh. Nothing special about it is popping into my head at the moment.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. There is no noticeable freshness date on the label. Appearance: This beer pours dark brown nearly black and is nearly opaque. Only a little bit of light makes it through at the very edges of the glass. From the pour it produces a one inch beige collar of thick foam. The head hangs on well and makes some thin lacing on the glass. Smell: There are strong chocolate and dark roasted malty notes in the aroma. Taste/Palate: This is a strait forward medium to full bodied beer with a fairly thin texture for the style. It has a simple but very tasty rich dark chocolaty character with some sweetness from the malt as well as loads of roasted/toasted notes. I also get some bitter dark coffee notes that hook up with the light bitterness from the hops. Notes: I really enjoyed this beer and wished I could get more than what was in the mixed sample pack.

Bottle [12oz] courtesy of swoopjones. Pours a deep amber, almost brown, with a large diminishing fluffy tan head. Decent lacing on the glass. Aroma: This smells great, lots of cocoa along with roasted malt, lactic notes, a bit of vanilla and some light hops -- just delightful. Flavour of dark, lightly bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and very light leafy hops. Creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied. Wow, this is fantastic!

Dark with a small off white hear. Aroma has cocoa, some roasted malts, pretty nice start. Flavor is smooth, cocoa, chocolate, some cream. Very good and quite surprising.

Bottle thanks to mora2000. The smell is very chocolate, mints, chocolate milk, and cocoa powder. The taste is a weird sweetness, chocolate, malts, and some roast. The look is brown in color with a beige head.

12 oz bottle, pours a dark brown color with little brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with some coffee and chocolate hints, typical for a sweet stout. Taste is sweet with not very much bitterness to balance it out. Palate is smooth and sits well in the mouth. Not much body. Nothing too out of the ordinary, nice sweet stout.

Lactic, some cherries and southern comfort, cocoa. Lots of interesting flavors in this sucker... finishes sweet and almost tart? weird but good

12oz bottle. Deep clear ruby-black pour with a solid frothy tan head (4-). Well, it certainly smells like chocolate - generic instant milk chocolate (sweetened) to be exact - but for all that, not bad. Tastes very light - grassy, extremely sweet, with some fresh crushed mint - but mostly cheap milk chocolate again .... not boozy at all. Extremely soft and frothy mouthfeel - just enough carbonation you don’t think "flat" - and a little sweet grassy herbal bitterness in the quickly-achieved finish; lovely mouthfeel, but not a great beer: the ladies might like it ;-)
