COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

Description
A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Bottle [12oz] courtesy of swoopjones. Pours a deep amber, almost brown, with a large diminishing fluffy tan head. Decent lacing on the glass. Aroma: This smells great, lots of cocoa along with roasted malt, lactic notes, a bit of vanilla and some light hops -- just delightful. Flavour of dark, lightly bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and very light leafy hops. Creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied. Wow, this is fantastic!

Dark with a small off white hear. Aroma has cocoa, some roasted malts, pretty nice start. Flavor is smooth, cocoa, chocolate, some cream. Very good and quite surprising.

Bottle thanks to mora2000. The smell is very chocolate, mints, chocolate milk, and cocoa powder. The taste is a weird sweetness, chocolate, malts, and some roast. The look is brown in color with a beige head.

12 oz bottle, pours a dark brown color with little brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with some coffee and chocolate hints, typical for a sweet stout. Taste is sweet with not very much bitterness to balance it out. Palate is smooth and sits well in the mouth. Not much body. Nothing too out of the ordinary, nice sweet stout.

Lactic, some cherries and southern comfort, cocoa. Lots of interesting flavors in this sucker... finishes sweet and almost tart? weird but good

12oz bottle. Deep clear ruby-black pour with a solid frothy tan head (4-). Well, it certainly smells like chocolate - generic instant milk chocolate (sweetened) to be exact - but for all that, not bad. Tastes very light - grassy, extremely sweet, with some fresh crushed mint - but mostly cheap milk chocolate again .... not boozy at all. Extremely soft and frothy mouthfeel - just enough carbonation you don’t think "flat" - and a little sweet grassy herbal bitterness in the quickly-achieved finish; lovely mouthfeel, but not a great beer: the ladies might like it ;-)

(12oz bottle, courtesy of Mora2000) Pours a near black body with a medium tan head. Aroma of chocolate whey protein powder, roasted malt, and lactose. Flavor of dark chocolate, after dinner mints, roasted malt, caramel, and some coffee with a dry finish.

12 ounce bottle that I have had sitting in my fridge since Christmas. I had a few of these during the holidays but just cracked another open now to rate. Pours a deep black color with a very small khaki head that disappears quickly. The aroma consists of chocolate... and a lot of it. I was also able to pick out a hint of light coffee also. I thought this beer was going to be too sweet from the aroma. It really wasn’t though. The taste also consisted of a lot of chocolate with a bit of coffee, some milk (had the consistency of it), and some very light spices. It had a medium bodied mouth feel and left a great chocolate taste in my mouth after every drink. This was a very good sweet stout. I would even go as far to say that this one is session able on a cold, winter day... that is saying a lot for a stout!

Bottle from 12-pack variety winter. Pours black with beige head. Aroma is of chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is creamy milk chocolate and in a way the texture resembles it. Not really bitter, but sweet and liquor-like in a sense. I had this beer before, but earlier in the season and I must say that I would have enjoyed it more if it had been colder outside when I drank it. But still, this beer is superbly tasty and has to be one of the best values out there, in terms of quality (and alcohol content).

Bottle and served in snifter: Basically very deep brown with a nice creamy tan head which left pretty good lace upon the glassware. WOW, the nose is full frontal milk and bakers chocolate. So strong is the chocolate vapours it is difficult to smell anything else but through hard work I was able to discover some mint, plum, toast and juniper esters. The taste is less sweet than I feared, the chocolate is more Cacao Nibs than sweetened processed kind. There is some coffee and hop bitterness that also helps with the balance with a touch of twangy almost sour fruit and allspice finish. The mouth feel is creamy but not too thick, more oily than anything along with a bit of an astringent and medicinal finish. Well, this is tad unique with it’s sweet nose but dry palate. I just dunno if I really like this enough to try again.
