Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

355mL. Pours a deep brown to near black with a fizzy, temporary mocha head that looks rich and rocky but is short-lived. No lace. Aroma is milk chocolate, chocolate covered maraschino cherries, cheap anniversary chocolate box. Taste makes it immediately evident that Harpoon does not really brew beer as much as they make flavored water. There is zero mouthfeel- mostly mineral water, Perrier. The taste is almost an afterthought, as if this was chocolate coffee vanilla flavored vitamin water. The aftertaste in mineral forward with lemon tartness coming back. I mean even a style that near impossible to ruin, Harpoon has accomplished this with flying colors.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, light lactose, and some cream. Poured very dark brown in color with a medium-sized, creamy, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Clear. Slightly to lightly sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, and some lactose. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Chocolate and roasted malt finish.

pours black with a medium sized mocha head that dissipates quickly but returns with agitation. aroma is very chocolatey...dark chocolate...with nice roastiness. flavor follows suit and also has some coffee and dark roasty malts. mouthfeel is very lively and thick with a dry very roasty finish that lacks the up front chocolate and linger pleasantly.

Bottle from the winter sampler. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium sized brown head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, cocoa. Very sweet. Faint roasty and dusty notes if you look for them. The taste is roasted malts, cocoa, chocolate, a milky note, a faint leafy hops. Medium bodied. Decent beer.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Liquors - Betton - 12 oz bottle - part of a "Wintry Mix" Variety 12 pak. Dark black licorice like pour with a thin, but sticky khaki colored head. Aroma is full of fresh milk chocolate and a hint of black dirt earthiness. Dark unsweetened baker’s chocolate is prominent in the flavor with a nice solid roasted back end. Hints of black dirt provide some balance. Mouthfeel, while decently thick has a slight metallic tint to it. Nice winter warmer.

Black. Long, foamy tan head with lacing. Aroma: Sweet chocolate, malt. Flavor: Sweet, dark chocolate, roasted malt. Coffee finish. Damn, this is the most chocolaty beer I have had yet! While it rates pretty high, it should rate even higher!

Clear black with big bubbles that fade quickly... Loads of chocolate in the nose, lots of cocoa, milk chocolate, has a cold hot chocolate feel to it, very one dimensional, but a very well done dimension... Coffee comes in to the flavor very much like a cold mocha coffee... Medium bodied with a dry finish... Really enjoyed this one, abundant chocolate flavor...

I picked up the Harpoon Winter mix 12pk to supplement the beer needed for my brothers Christmas party in a couple days. Well, there won’t be any chocolate stout left then. It pours a nice dark black with mild carbonation and a small head with lacing. Has a nice roasted chocolate aroma with some coffee. Flavor is also full of sweet dark chocolate with a slightly bitter coffee ending. Good stuff.
