4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Disclaimer - I love chocolate stouts. It was exciting to find this at the Raleigh Total Wine, and we finally opened a few tonight. Dark, not black, in color, with a thin tan head that moderately lingered. Smell was clearly chocolate, also roasty and toasty notes and a touch of caramel. Smooth on the palate with a jolt of bittersweet chocolate flavor, and just plain delicious....this is one that demands a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a dessert.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a tannish head. Nose is hot cocoa and marshmallow with light coffee and tobacco. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is chocolate, cola and coffee. Finishes burnt and earthy keeping this from coming off overly sweet. Good for a lighter nightcap.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Best before February 15, 2013.
Appearance: The body is chestnut, but completely opaque through all but the center. A dense and decently sized tan head sits on top with decent retention, settling into a thick coating.
Aroma: The aroma is strong of cocoa in various ways, sweet milk chocolate, fudge and cocoa powder primarily, with a mild caramel, black coffee and nuttiness . This is sweet, but nowhere near cloying, I am blown away with how much this smells like chocolate, almost hints of peanut butter too. This is just outstanding.
Taste: The intro is mild, but quickly adds sweet cocoa, while a peanut butter nuttiness creeps up. The finish becomes roasty with a black coffee presence thatís mild and slightly earthy. The flavor isnít as bold as the aroma, but itís very nice.
Palate: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: Harpoon has absolutely nailed the chocolate stout category. This is huge in fudge and cocoa powder flavors while having a dry roasted presence to balance it out. I canít think of a beer better deserving of the name "chocolate stout."

Medium bodied. Very smooth, with some similarities to a milk stout in terms of the palate. Nice, rich, chocolate sweetness with plenty of coffee notes as well. Only a little bitter. Really nice.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: AUG 11, 2013 Mmmmm, Christmas beer. Pours a rich dark brown with little head. Some of the best aromas Iíve ever gotten from beer, roasty and (obviously) chocolate. The taste is more of the same, maybe a little less intense. Wonderful, thick mouth feel, this is almost a chocolate pudding in a glass.
