Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Not necessarily my cup of tea, but not horrible. Big fan of dark beers but this is too far from my comfort zone to buy again.

deep black color with extreamely noticeable chocolate aroma. very smooth flavour just like a stout should be. very malty/chocolate taste that blend very well together. low carbonation and very easy to drink. definitely a step above most of their other sellections. great winter stout and highly recomended for someone with a palate for dark lagers. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours bright brown with a tan head that fades quickly to a rim and centered coating. Light wet lacing. Aroma is wonderful sweet cocoa and a bit nutty. Taste is chocolate and roasted malt grains with a bit of sourness in the finish. Palate is crisp, dry and carbonated. A decent and very drinkable beer, though somewhat thin. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Black. Smaller head. Aroma is strong cocoa powder, and chocolate brownies. Light sweetness. Lighter bodied stout. Dry finish. Creamy texture. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft. Pours near black with a small tan head. Aromas of brownie, chocolate pudding, vanilla, and a touch of roast. Imagine melting down a chocolate bar and then mixing it with chocolate ice cream....Bam! What a wonderful brew. Insanely drinkable and full of flavor. Yummmm

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2013 Opaque, tall, very persistent, tan head. Rich coffee nose. Full body, lean despite thick foam, rather dry, hint of sourness, intense flavor but rather hollow middle and lacking, watery, flat mouthfeel. Here it would be nice to have some acidity, alcohol, sweetness or bitterness. Short on palate with a dry, sour finish. Intense milk chocolate flavor, roast grains, chocolaty finish. Contradictory ensemble of qualities and faults, will probably appeal to some palates but for me, I just hope it could be fixed.

A fairly decent aroma but lacking in flavor. If you want a chocolate flavor there are plenty of others to go for.
