Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Great beer. Rich dark brown color, creamy head, excellent lacing. Sweet aroma, not too chocolaty, and the taste has a different flavor than the aroma... More malty, mocha.

Tap at Stags Head. Deep brown pour with creamy head. Nose of fudge. Tastes super chocolaty, with some heavy cream, earth, vanilla, coffee, and more chocolate. Just rich dessert beer. Just a touch to cloying for me

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2014 Bottle into pint glass, deep dark brown color with tan head. Aroma of heavy chocolate and roasted malt, light notes of coffee and marshmallow. Taste adds notes of chocolate milk, nuttiness, cola (interesting note), black coffee, liquorice and slight earthy hop note. Light body, low carbonation, slick, dry with bittersweet roasty finish. Smells like a chocolate bomb but taste brings out much more complexity. Very nice.

Avg stout. Taste like it needed to brew longer. Plenty of chocolate and malt. Just not enough beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Had this one from the bottle. Pours out a nice black with a beige head. The aroma is just huge walls of chocolate. It almost has a fudge type of smell to it. This taste right off the bat is chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. But in the aftertaste you get some coffee flavors coming through mixing in with the chocolate. Which is a great finish. This beer is super, super sweet. Definitely one to have as desert after dinner. But pretty good overall. In my honest opinion.

Poured from bottle. Big chocolate aroma with some hops. Stout black with lacing tan head. I taste cocoa, toasted malt, licorice and a bit of coffee. My only gripe is a slightly watery feel. Reminds me of a beer I had in Salzburg that tasted just like chocolate milk. Simply delicious.

Disclaimer - I love chocolate stouts. It was exciting to find this at the Raleigh Total Wine, and we finally opened a few tonight. Dark, not black, in color, with a thin tan head that moderately lingered. Smell was clearly chocolate, also roasty and toasty notes and a touch of caramel. Smooth on the palate with a jolt of bittersweet chocolate flavor, and just plain delicious....this is one that demands a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a dessert.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a tannish head. Nose is hot cocoa and marshmallow with light coffee and tobacco. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is chocolate, cola and coffee. Finishes burnt and earthy keeping this from coming off overly sweet. Good for a lighter nightcap.

Best before February 15, 2013.
Appearance: The body is chestnut, but completely opaque through all but the center. A dense and decently sized tan head sits on top with decent retention, settling into a thick coating.
Aroma: The aroma is strong of cocoa in various ways, sweet milk chocolate, fudge and cocoa powder primarily, with a mild caramel, black coffee and nuttiness . This is sweet, but nowhere near cloying, I am blown away with how much this smells like chocolate, almost hints of peanut butter too. This is just outstanding.
Taste: The intro is mild, but quickly adds sweet cocoa, while a peanut butter nuttiness creeps up. The finish becomes roasty with a black coffee presence that’s mild and slightly earthy. The flavor isn’t as bold as the aroma, but it’s very nice.
Palate: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: Harpoon has absolutely nailed the chocolate stout category. This is huge in fudge and cocoa powder flavors while having a dry roasted presence to balance it out. I can’t think of a beer better deserving of the name "chocolate stout."
