Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Excited to see City Bev throw this one on-tap. I’ve wanted to try this one as I am a sucker for chocolate stouts, and the bottles seem to elude me. Came out a deep black with a thick frothy tan head on top. The aroma on this is amazing. Big milk chocolate, vanilla cream, malt. Really a nice, sweet aroma. The body on this is a little disappointing. Thin and lacking in body and bite. Carbonation is present, but this is too slick for the style and flavor profile. Nice sweet chocolate flavors start this out. Vanilla sweetness fights its way in and this finishes with a slight dry note. Graham crackers, toffee bars, and more chocolate. This is sweet, for sure, but it’s not overbearing in any way. I wouldn’t mind having this in my fridge. Another hit for Harpoon.

12oz bottle from Crossroads. Poured a thin black color with a small dark tan head of foam. Aroma of Cocoa puffs, dark roasted malts, and marshmallows. Taste is full of bakers chocolate, with notes of burnt malts, earth, and vanilla.

Draft at Brick House. Poured a deep Tootsie Roll brown with hardly any head. Aroma is damn nice, loads of chocolate, chocolate milk, cocoa beans and some well done bread. Body is medium with soft stingy carbonation, could definitely be thicker and creamier. Flavor is good but not as good as aroma. Notes of cocoa powder, chocolate muffins and dark toast. Solid for Harpoon at least.

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours deep red black, quick khaki head, little lacing or retention. Aroma of dark chocolate, roasted coffee. Taste is generally sweet, only slight coffee like bitterness. Medium bodied, light carbonation, mouth feel is slightly watery. Finishes sweet with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and brown sugar. Easy drinking stout. Not bad.

Milk chocolate aroma. Appearance is jet black with a tan head with below average retention. Flavor is full of smooth, creamy chocolate. Hop bitterness is moderate. Mouthfeel is medium light with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a good tasting, smooth chocolate beer. A little thin though. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Very good stout. Easy to drink with the right amount of silky chocolate notes throughout. Dark black pour without much of a head. Easy drinking stout despite the 5.9.

You get a good cocoa aroma once the bottle is open. This stout has a sweet dark chocolate and coffee flavor. A good dessert beer with brownies or chocolate cake. This really hit the spot. I would definitely recommend this.

The smell is chocolate and coffee, and the appearance is dark and wonderful. The taste is just too overwhelmingly chocolaty, slight coffee, and too unrefined. The mouth feel is slightly watery. I’ll definitely NOT be getting this stout again. And I had such high hopes.
