COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

Description
A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

On tap at Capone’s. Dark brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Nice chocolate aroma with some roastiness. Tastes of chocolate and roasty, but there was just something there that didn’t live up to the aromas - just couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Bottle (Thanks to joss!): As black as ink, stable mid-sized tanned head; distinctive aromas of sweet milk-chocolate and blueberries (!) in the nose; surprisingly dry bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, soft; gentle chocolatey and berry-like flavours in the finish, followed by an illusion of cacao-powder in the aftertaste. Very nice liquid fruit-cake.....

(bottle, 35.5cl) Black coloured hue with a light-brown medium-sized foamy head. Sweet and distinctively chocolate-malty and moderately roasted aroma with notes of blueberries. Surprisingly bitter flavour with a dry mouthfeel, medium to light bodied with a smooth carbonation. Roasty malty base with notes of dark and milk chocolate with berry-fruity accents; dry and moderately roasty malty finish with notes of chocolate and fruits lingering into the aftertaste. A superb liquid blueberry-muffin. 16.II.11

355mL. Pours a deep brown to near black with a fizzy, temporary mocha head that looks rich and rocky but is short-lived. No lace. Aroma is milk chocolate, chocolate covered maraschino cherries, cheap anniversary chocolate box. Taste makes it immediately evident that Harpoon does not really brew beer as much as they make flavored water. There is zero mouthfeel- mostly mineral water, Perrier. The taste is almost an afterthought, as if this was chocolate coffee vanilla flavored vitamin water. The aftertaste in mineral forward with lemon tartness coming back. I mean even a style that near impossible to ruin, Harpoon has accomplished this with flying colors.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose and taste of stale chocolate Easter bunnies and roasted malts with some vanilla extract.
