Our head brewer at our Windsor brewery homebrewed a batch of chocolate stout for himself after trying the style at a beer dinner and loving it. After several Harpooners tried Scott’s batch, we knew that we needed to add this beer to our lineup. It was originally introduced as a limited edition extra in our winter mix pack back in 2008, but it was soon apparent that our drinkers wanted more of this beer (a beer made with chocolate…not too hard to understand!), so we brought it back in 6-packs in 2010.

A chocolate stout is a beer with a noticeable dark chocolate flavor. This flavor is created from the use of darker, more aromatic malt that has been roasted or kilned until it acquires a chocolate color. Harpoon Chocolate Stout is brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate.

Medium bodied. Very smooth, with some similarities to a milk stout in terms of the palate. Nice, rich, chocolate sweetness with plenty of coffee notes as well. Only a little bitter. Really nice.

Dark brown/black, opaque, tan head. Aroma of biscuity/nutty malt with lots of chocolate, light roast. Flavor: deep chocolate, a slight roasty edge, hints of caraway and licorice, dark bread crusts.

Old rating. Chocolate through and through. Bitter more than sweet which I am okay with. Not the best chocobeer, but it works in a pinch.

Bottle 355ml (from Puerto Rico)
Dark, almost opaque color, small steady beige head. Aroma has strong chocolate and mud cake. Medium-bodied. Dark chocolaty flavor too, mudcake, toasted maltyness. I am not a big fan of these "chocolate beers which taste only chocolate" but well-brewed. Sweet stout with lots of sweetness and low bitterness.

bottled - very dark in appearance with a reddish tinge to it. Super sweet aroma. Super chocolatey - tastes like chocolate syrup was added.

Sweet dark chocolate aroma. Black body with a light brown head that quickly thins. Dark unsweetened chocolate taste that I can’t identify. Roasted malt is more present than the chocolate in the taste. Mildly bitter.

Bottle. Black pour with a small creamy head that fades to a thick ring. Aroma is like a melted chocolate bar with a hint of nuts and marshmallow. Taste has a light sweetness up front but a dry and bitter finish. Chcoolate is way more mild than expected. More generic roast and bitter chocolate, some nuts, not much else. Sorta bland for a chocolate beer.

12oz bottle from Crossroads. Poured a thin black color with a small dark tan head of foam. Aroma of Cocoa puffs, dark roasted malts, and marshmallows. Taste is full of bakers chocolate, with notes of burnt malts, earth, and vanilla.

Draft at Brick House. Poured a deep Tootsie Roll brown with hardly any head. Aroma is damn nice, loads of chocolate, chocolate milk, cocoa beans and some well done bread. Body is medium with soft stingy carbonation, could definitely be thicker and creamier. Flavor is good but not as good as aroma. Notes of cocoa powder, chocolate muffins and dark toast. Solid for Harpoon at least.
