COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 1986 Harpoon co-founders Rich Doyle and Dan Kenary began brewing Harpoon in Boston to share with others the joy of making—and drinking—great beer. In 2000, we added a second brewery in Windsor, Vermont to keep up with the demand. As a regional craft brewer, we gained interest and respect for cider, a drink with strong roots and history in New England. Harpoon’s cider is our contribution to the long heritage of cider made with fresh juice from locally grown apples.

Harpoon Cider is made from a blend of locally grown apples including the New England favorite, McIntosh. By fermenting this blend of varieties with our own yeast we are able to produce an aroma that has a clean, fruity character. This crisp, refreshing cider has just the right balance of ripe apple sweetness and tartness from the fruit’s natural acidity. The color of this smooth tasting cider is very light as a result of using only freshly pressed apples. Without the addition of preservatives, artificial colors, or sweeteners we have created a cider that is fresh, pure, and delicious. Enjoy!

Tried a sample at Brewfest Tallahassee. Whoa, they missed the mark here somehow. This tastes like carbonated apple juice mixed with some vodka... not good.

Bottle from Kegs & Barrels in Plano, TX. Pours a very light straw yellow with a VERY fast fading white fizzy head...took like a second to dissipate. Aroma is light fresh red apples. Flavor is of light apples. Mouth feel is fizzy and very watery. Overall, it’s tasty but it is just a weak attempt at a cider.....weak on aroma, taste, appearance and mouth feel.....it will quench a thirst....by no means is it nasty, just very weak.

Bottle from Pat’s Liquors in Porter, Indiana: Not a lot to report here. It pours a pale, clear yellow body with a tad of visible carbonation, most of the tiny bubbles glued to the bottom of the glass. The aroma is fresh, soft sweet apples. Pretty much the taste of it, too, except that there’s a slight flavor of apple skin and the modest amount of spritziness keeps it from getting too sweet. Okay, I s’pose.

12 oz bottle from Siciliano’s and our trip to Michigan. Pours a more champagney hue, white head that dies to nothing. Aromas are straight apple, a bit of peel, very applesaucey feel with sweetness definitely there, not much dryness. Initial is sweeter apple, lacking dryness of carbonation liveliness. Lacks complexity as all you get is apple sweetness (not that it is bad, it feels quite natural without extra sugar added). Finish is sweet, but mellow. Dissappointing in balance.

Experienced on tap at the brewery. The beer pours a medium golden color. The nose that comes through is reminicent of apple juice, sweetened cider, and some artificial flavors of apple. There is a light to moderate carbonation that runs across the palate. The flavor dimentions are rather sweet, reflecting what the barman said were the use of gala apples. Overall, decent, but not really memorable in any way.

MicroGrog (303) - FT: Stale Polotmavý in Queens, New York, USA - JUL 15, 2009
Pours out the color of Coors Light. Just a weak ring of off-white head. On tap it’s just a touch darker, or maybe it’s just the setting I’m drinking it in. The smell perfumes apple sauce & cantaloupe. A little sharp. Is this really natural? Off the tap it smells like standing water & mushy apples. Taste is similar, though more watered down. Rock candy. Decently tart. A considerable plastic note kills it for me though. Finish consists of apple skins & vegetables, with some chalky yeastiness. Feel is soft carbonation & runny jam. Alcohol is negligible, but sticks out on tap. Different, though questionably natural. Off the tap the carbonation just rips it apart, giving off sulfur, harsh acidity, boxed apple juice & dirty water. Almost totally different ciders. One questionable, one terrible. bottle score: 2.6 / tap score: 1.3

Fresh apple aroma, with a slight baked caste and some off phenolic after-effects. Clear, very pale, big champagne bubbles. More sour than sweet, has some light earthiness, generally crisp, but there are some off notes. Thin body. Expected a little better from Harpoon - at least more character, even if I didn’t love it. World Market, Tallahassee.

Pours a crystal clear light yellow with lots of carbonation. Aroma is cellared apples and a bit of sweetness, also there was some strange aroma I couldn’t place that bugged me throughout the first few whiffs of this cider. the flavor was actually ok, nice and tart, some good apple notes without being cloying, but that weird flavor note waas still there, but then it hit me. . . Garlic. this whole cider tasted and smelled like garlic olive oil I get at the local pizza joint. Had a rough time finishing it after that. Really strange flavor to find in a cider.

On tap, Eli Cannon’s. Pours horribly pale gold-clear, reminding me of cheap printer paper. Aroma is of green apples, and fermenting alcohol. Flavor is decently fresh apple at first, with a light palate. Unfortunately the initial flavors dissipate quickly into slightly tart watery, alcohol flavors that just fail to appeal. I’ll pass in the future.
