In 2014, we visited our friends at the Scrag Mt. Sugar House in Waitsfield, VT to source over 100 pounds of local, organic maple syrup to brew with a hearty porter in this rich addition to our occasional releases. Local ingredients combine with brewing tradition to make for one enjoyable tribute to the change of New England seasons.

A subtle, dark, roasted character complements the rich maple sugar in the finish. Substantial head retention shows off the sweet, nutty, dark-sugar aroma, balanced by Willamette hops.

Aromas of dried raisiny fruit, booze, hints of maple. Black with a somewhat lasting off-white head. Initial fruity sweetness, syrupy. Full bodied, warming.

Dark brown with Amber tint and tan head. Roasted malt aroma with vanilla and maple syrup smokiness. Roasted malt and vanilla start followed with some smokiness, woody maple syrup flavor, and dark dried fruits. Underlying sweetness. Slight pine finish. There is a lingering sweetness aftertaste from the maple syrup. I was shocked to see that this a 9.1% beer, the alcohol is really masked.

deep, dark brown to black color; roasted malt and maple syrup aroma; sweet, roasted malt flavor with maple and chocolate notes; perhaps a bit too sweet

The aroma is roasted malts, maple syrup. The appears nice is dark brown, slightest bit of light getting through. The flavor is roasty, chocolate, light maple syrup. The finish is roast, bitter chocolate, light maple. Medium/thick body. Not bad. Thought the maple would be more pronounced.

On tap at the Vermont brewery: Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma of maple, chocolate, nuts, and cereal grains. Taste is chocolate, nuts, cocoa, and a touch of maple. The maple syrup really starts to come through once the beer warms up. Medium to heavy body, little carbonation, this is really good. Surprisingly, it’s not as sweet as I was assuming it would be.

Pours a dark brown color with a foamy light brown head. Notes of nuts, smoke, cookie crust, maple syrup, and chocolate. Nice well balanced beer.

The pour produced a nice head. The aroma was strong maple syrup. Dark, rich pour. The taste is somewhat less exciting than the smell. Maple syrup does come through, but the sweetness is overwhelming. Overall, not the best I’ve tasted.

Tap. Clear dark brown pour with an off white head. Caramel, nuts, coco. Medium body. Sweet finish. Decent
