Last fall our brewers were improvising a new beer in our 10-barrel kettle. We had some fresh pumpkin puree leftover from a recent brew of our UFO Pumpkin, so the brewers threw that in the kettle with a bit of molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and some roasted malts. It turned out to be delicious, so we thought we’d share it with everyone.

Half imperial stout, half pumpkin ale, with aromas of dried fruit, chocolate, and freshly baked pumpkin pie, this black full-bodied stout is ready to be enjoyed now or saved for a chilly fall evening.

2014 Bomber from State Line. Dark brown, large foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of pumpkin, vanilla, roasted malt. The taste is pumpkin, vanilla, roasted malts, dark fruits. Medium bodied, high carbonation, mild booze, moderate lingering bitterness. Solid.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a very hazy molasses brown with a thin white head. Loads of spice on the nose. Cinnamon right away, spices dominate. Cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, dusty pie spices. Spices are overpowering, covering up everything else except the alcohol. Warm and boozy with very little besides spices. There’s a hint of malt and roast, but it’s mostly spices into bitterness with warming alcohol on the finish.

Lost rating from last fall. Imperial stout with pumpkin? Or pumpkin pie with a chocolate crust? You be the judge! I find it guilty of being tasty.

A black body with a ran head that had good retention. Aroma was a mix of sour pumpkin, chocolate, pumpkin pie spices and caramel malts. Flavor was initially sweet a mix of dark chocolate and caramel malts. Pumpkin was mild or at least more mild than the aroma indicated. Nice spices rounded out the flavor. Alcohol was a warming presence in the finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22 oz bottle from my local Kroger. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have dark malts, some pumpkin spices, pumpkin flesh, chocolate, ssome roasted malt, hints of molasses, decent enough, alcohol well hidden, maybe a bit surprised.

Whoever captured this release managed to mix the worst of a pumpkin seasonal with a mundane imperial stout. As one of the other it would have been better. The compromises or tweaks to make it both have created something that is only worth trying because of the low $5.99 price point.

Aroma / Appearance - A fluid rich black base almost suffocates under a dense beige head. After a while it settles to a moderate thickness that lets the smell of heavy spices (including cinnamon, nutmeg, and chocolate) waft upwards in small bursts. Any squash or pumpkin remains covertly masked by the other aromas.

Flavor / Palate - A carbonated mouthfeel bubbles over the tongue. Sweeping with it a crest of chocolate covered pumpkin, nutmeg, spice, and whipped cream, the profile lacks a strong presence to tie everything together. Refreshing and fluid rather than full bodied, the finish tastes as unremarkable as everything else about this run of the mill seasonal. If you paid much more than $5.99 you should get some money back.

Bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of tan foam. Aromas of caramel, cinnamon, clove, light allspice and light roastiness. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of caramel, clove, cinnamon and allspice with a smooth dry lingering spiced finish.
