COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Last fall our brewers were improvising a new beer in our 10-barrel kettle. We had some fresh pumpkin puree leftover from a recent brew of our UFO Pumpkin, so the brewers threw that in the kettle with a bit of molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, and some roasted malts. It turned out to be delicious, so we thought weíd share it with everyone.

Description
Half imperial stout, half pumpkin ale, with aromas of dried fruit, chocolate, and freshly baked pumpkin pie, this black full-bodied stout is ready to be enjoyed now or saved for a chilly fall evening.

Bomber purchased at Meijer in Westerville, OH. Harpoon Imperial Pumpkin is an inky black brown pour with a decent ring of off white head. Nose is mostly pumpkin pie spices, cloves, nutmeg, and a touch of cinnamon. Taste is a good amount of earthy pumpkin taste with a decent, if not a bit overpowering spice hit. Body is full and has a good just this side of creamy texture. Alcohol is evident as well. Ideally, I like a little less spice in my pumpkin beers, but this is nearly perfect.

Opaque black our with little or no head or retention. Not much of a looker, but still dark and mysterious. Before getting my nose anywhere near the glass, this thing is an olfactory monster. Strong pumpkin pie spices emanate with some malt candy and toffee behind. Tastes almost as good, maybe a bit much on the spices though. Surprisingly smooth at this ABV, and I think the stout side of this brew is solid. Overall a little on the sweet side, and I enjoy some of the sweetest brews. Finish is pretty clean. One of the better of this category.

22oz bottle from 9/13: Held up/developed really well! Somewhat sweet, slightly dry w/plenty of pumpkin, well-balanced spices & chocolate. Full+ body and medium+ carbonation.

Poured into a snifter. 3.0 A: Black color. Did not get much of a head to form, but it was a light brown color. 3.5 S: Pumpkin spiciness - nutmeg, ginger, clove, cinnamon - are most prominent. Next is roastiness, molasses, caramel, and chocolate underneath. Itís not bad, but the aromas donít have the right proportions. Itís hard to explain. 3.5 T: Pumpkin spices mentioned above with cinnamon being the most prominent. Perhaps a bit too much roastiness and not quite enough sweetness. Molasses, caramel, and chocolate. Again the flavors seem out of proportion. I wish I could make this more clear, but it seems I canít. Boozy warming on finish. 3.25 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Definitely needs more creaminess, but not too detrimental. 3.5 D: Itís okay, but has problems that I canít really explain. I love pumpkin beers, but Iíve only had a handful that are done really well. ★ 908 characters DavoleBomb, Sep 01, 2013

After checking out the ABV, I opted on the tulip for this one. The appearance was a black color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated fairly quickly. Lacing was barely there. The smell starts off with some ginger, light allspice, subtle pumpkin, light breadiness and a tad of raisin. The taste was mainly sweet with an ample sweet to spicy (ginger to all-spice-esque feel). The aftertaste is somewhat pumpkin-esque leading into a sweet to subtle sticky sort of nice pumpkin-esque finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body, as thereís a good sipping quality about this one. Carbonation feels good for a pumpkin ale (imperial, eh, okay, I get it), sure, no difference for anyone that knows anything about pumpkin ales. Overall, I went into this with low expectations and came out with WTF was this? Uh...way better than Iíd thought it would be. Haha, yeah, I would have this one again, definitely.
