This copper colored ale is floral, medium bodied, with a crisp, refreshing finish. Originally our summer seasonal in 1993, it is now available year-round. Harpoon IPA was ranked atop both domestic and imported IPAs by Beer Connoisseur Magazine.

A nice dark copper with a quickly dissipating white head. A good hop aroma leaves you wanting more flavor in the actual beer. A decent IPA, but nothing spectacular.

(Bottle) Deep amber body with quick dissipating head. Beautiful aroma of floral hops and slight malt. Nice hoppy flavour. Bitter finish. Good!

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2004 Draught version: The beer pours a golden color. Decent enough white head with a decent amount of lacing down the glass. The aroma is fairly decent, with a decent hop aroma. Fairly good hop bite, with a little maltiness to the taste. It is a hair thin in the body department. Pretty decent beer, although it could have a bit more hoppiness to it. Re-rate: seems to have a bit more body to it this time.

Gunshy (479) - Ohio, USA - JUN 22, 2003
This beer poured an amber color and formed a white foamy head that receded slowly and left some nice lace on the side of the glass. A nice hop aroma was apparent, but not overpowering as some others are. A flavor of hops and caramel. The finish was a touch sweet with some bitterness. This wasn't a bad IPA, but certainly not one of my favorites.

hopscotch (9171) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - JUN 21, 2003
Sparkling clear, lightly golden ale with a medium-sized, white, fizzy head. Decent lacing. The aroma is of sweet malt (honey) and very floral, peppery hops. A hint of pine and apricot as well. The flavor is malty for a moment and then the well-balanced, moderately bitter, lightly acetic hop addition kicks in. Very pleasant. Light-bodied with a lightly creamy mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Lengthy, dry, astringent finish with an earthy/woodsy flavor at the very end.

UPDATED: JUL 24, 2012 Good hoppy aroma & flavor, with a slight citrusy edge to it. This beer is a perfect compliment to spicy food-Iíve already had it with buffalo wings, indian, and mexican food. Itís also very smooth & drinkable; a good beer for any occasion. Update July 2012: Wow, I rated this 9 years ago? Unbelievable. Anyway, I still enjoy this beer, but it tastes a little weak this year. Iím not sure if the recipe was changed, or if Iíve just been spoiled by all the ultra-hoppy beers that have come out recently, but this just doesnít taste the same as I remember. The hops are a bit subdued for an IPA. This is a classic brew, but I feel like it has been left in the dust by the craft beer scene.

A truly wonderful tasting IPA. Could use more aroma though. The biggest disappointment however is the aftertaste, or lack thereof. It mysteriously disappers. Perhaps this beer should be called the UFO...

I tried this beer on tap at Legal Seafood on Long Island. It was easily the best beer in the place because it was about the only decent brew they had. Nice amber color, good floral nose. Hops bite was more than moderate but somewhat subdued for an American version of IPA. Nice and very drinkable. I'd definitely have another pint or two.

Amber hue; fruity, floral aroma. Moderately hoppy. This IPA whispers more than it shouts. Modest clean finish.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2004 rerate: Medium gold color (lighter than I remember) with moderate head. Crisp hops flavor in moderation (definately not a West Coast IPA).
