2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 Chalsk (824) - North Caldwell, New Jersey, USA - SEP 3, 2010
Pours an amber orange color with a white foam head. Has an aroma of grapfruit with subtle hints of caramel. Has a light mouthfeel with slight bitters. Not enough flavor for me. Decent.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Frank (1964) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 1, 2010
Harpoon IPA is sort of of the old guard as far as craft beer is concerned. This started out as an IPA in 1993 and now a days, most breweries regular pale ales are higher and alcohol and hoppier than this is. This is really an APA by today’s standards and a milder take on the style at that. That’s not a bad thing, just how it is. The color is a pleasant orange golden w/ a small head of fine white bubbles. The nose is rather mild, grain husks compete w/ some lightly citric hops and a hint of fruity ale yeast. The flavor is nice and lemony, rather fresh tasting and quite drinkable on account of this being rather dry. The palate too is quite nice, light but creamy w/ only slightly assertive carbonation. While this might be a bit on the tame side, it does have a nice, reserved quality which I feel is not done often enough.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beer Snob (457) - Ontario, CANADA - SEP 1, 2010
Very nice indeed. An herbal hop aroma and a medium, smooth bitterness that gently subsided. A slight tang left on the tongue as it goes down easily.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 FROTHINGSLOSH (3205) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 30, 2010
Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a yellow-golden color with a huge creamy yellow-white head that lingered and produced some lacing. The aroma was dry with a moderate grapefruit and pine element. The flavor was dry with a moderate grapefruit and lemon presence and a chalky and sour undertone. The finish was long, dry and hoppy. Medium body. Decent.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 bbbeer (181) - Massachusetts, USA - AUG 28, 2010
Standard IPA. Typical color and body. Hops in aroma and flavor but not overwhelming so you can definitely have a few of these. Always pleased to see this on tap. I may not get it if there is something more interesting but if not this is always a solid option.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Balazs (562) - Budapest, HUNGARY - AUG 27, 2010
Poured honey yellow with a lacing off-white head. Grassy, pine, honey, grapefruit, malts, some white grapes in the aroma. Medium dense body with high carbonation. Sweet, long lasting aftertaste. Nothing outstanding here, but pretty good.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 minch25 (550) - Medford, Massachusetts, USA - AUG 24, 2010
On tap. Dark red/orange/brown. Almost no head. Actually doesn’t look very appetizing at all. Oily hop aroma. Tastes fine - bitter. Goes well with the burger.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Chapel (418) - Levittown, New York, USA - AUG 23, 2010
I have seen this around so much and never bought it because something else always struck me as more rare. I finally got around to it because someone else brought it along on a camping trip. It is, for lack of a better description, exactly what I expect from an IPA. Light taste upfront with a nice hit of bitterness and pine hops at the end. Comparing to something like Stone IPA, it is a bit lighter on the hop but not significantly. If you like hops, you will like this, but you won’t love it.
