This copper colored ale is floral, medium bodied, with a crisp, refreshing finish. Originally our summer seasonal in 1993, it is now available year-round. Harpoon IPA was ranked atop both domestic and imported IPAs by Beer Connoisseur Magazine.

Schooner from keg at Draft House Tower Bridge. Pours gold/orange, minimal head. A bit too carbonated for me. Nice bitterness, but perhaps needs more citrus to it. I have had this at source in Boston and it was awesome, so perhaps it doesnít travel that well. Still a good IPA.

Bottle 12 fl.oz from Bier-Bienne (CH). Orangy India very bitter but with tropical fruity, floral notes, compote and resin. Well done.

Tap at Seasons & Grille Bar, Portland. Originally rated 20160219. Colour is clear orange with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Some fruits, some sweetness, some hops and malts. Some strange bad flavours. Dirty taps I think or otherwise this is very bad beer.

Appearance: hazy pale gold with one finger of ivory head, good retention and patchy lacing. (3/5) Aroma: floral, bready malt, grassy, pine, hint of citrus. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium-light body, moderate-low carbonation, off-dry finish. (3/5) Definitely a more English-style IPA, with the hops, any least on the tongue, being less well-defined and sharp than the typical American versions. Donít get me wrong, weíre not in ESB territory or anything, and thereís a little bit of stone and tropical fruit coming out as it warms, but itís definitely a milder implementation. Not unpleasant by any means, and I donít think being a week after the best-by date hurt this too much. (13/20)

Bottle. Mild aroma: grainy malt, floral hops. The hops are more apparent in as firm bitterness than as a prominent flavor component. Strong sweet maltiness puts this solidly in the East coast-style IPA territory. Really nice creaminess to the body, with gentle CO2 to match. Maybe closer to todayís pale ales than our IPAs, but still: drinkable.

Very clear light amber with generous soapy head. Whiffs of grass, biscuit, some pine. Super sweet taste with hints of pine, medicinal, and fruit candy (like starburst). Has a nice medium body thatís a little creamy with an abrupt finish. What does linger is an unpleasant sugary aftertaste.

This beer looks prettier than it tastes or smells. Itís a nice mild color, and its scent isnít too piney, but it lingers and when you actually sip it, it tastes like youíre drinking something made from pinecones.
