12 oz bottle. Pours a clear, dark amber/brown with rich beige head. Aroma of strong malt, notes of honey and strong fruity esters with a touch of alcohol spice. Flavor is very much the same and sweet with fussel notes, candy sugar, pepper and strong bitter finish. Mouth feel is heavy body with medium-high carbonation. Overall, not bad.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Boliv (1146) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 19, 2010
Bottle. Pours orangey/red with a foamy 1-finger light beige head. Aromas of citrus peel, slight juniper, caramel, and berry. The flavor is orangepeel, pine, and alcohol-soaked cherries. The aftertaste is cherry with bitter grass. Thick, full-bodied mouthfeel, and warming, with evident alcohol. Alright, but Triticus was better.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 auerbrau (2953) - Peace Dale, Rhode Island, USA - DEC 13, 2010
12oz Bottle. Nice warm, fruity, fresh and malty aroma. A nice redness to this example, with a good lick of up front hoppiness. Pours a slightly hazed dark amber, with plenty of creamy, soft off-white head. The flavors are not extremely complex, and the malt base seems a little less dense than I would expect for a 10% barleywine, but I appreciate the added perception of dryness. It’s kind of like an unhoppy Stone barleywine, not a lot of raging malt action. Finishes clean and bright. This is a fine beer, just a little safe.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 mar (4244) - Dallas, Texas, USA - DEC 12, 2010
Deep amber with a cream head. Nose is hops, dark fruits, light caramel, and doughy malts. Nice on the palate, flavor is chewy malts, sticky, hops are there but not the stars of this show, leave this one to the malts, and fruit flavors. Slightly hot finish.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DocLock (6800) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 10, 2010
Bottle from Capone’s that I’m cracking now as I listen to Daughtry. The pour is clear deep coppery caramel colored with 1-finger off-white head. Not quite a 5. Nose is nice earthy caramel malt, spirity hops, fruit, tart slightly funky yeasty, with that "Hey, man, I;m a big barleywine, and you are going to have to deal with me" smell that we all crave so much. The flavor is big caramel malty, a bit sticky, very fruity, with big hops, caro syrupy malt that is big and bold, a solid complexity, and a complex, dense palate. This is one of Harpoon’s best whales, but you really need to be Ahab to appreciate it. Queequegs need not apply.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 michael-pollack (4962) - King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 1, 2010
12oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, slight alcohol, light dark ripe fruit, and some toasted sugars. Poured copper/amber in color with a small, tan head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is light to medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, light alcohol, light caramel, hops, slight toasting, slight brown sugar, and yeast. Medium body. Oily, then lightly dry and slightly sticky texture. Average carbonation. Malt, toasted sugar, hop, and caramel finish is lightly dry. 10%ABV is quite obvious in the flavor, and noticeable in the aroma. Not all that much flavor.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 crusianbeer (116) - Texas, USA - DEC 1, 2010
pous a very dark amber color with about a finger of head.
nose is thick with sweet, brown sugary molasses, hops, and alcohol burn. yum. lol
taste is about spot on with the nose. Very sweet, with a strong brown sugary molasses flavor. Alcohol on the finish is definitely there, but the burn is not too bad due to the hops and the sweet making it pretty smooth. Makes me wonder what this would do in the cellar... a little thin for my tastes, as the barleywines I have been liking lately have been pretty thick. But, overall not too bad an attempt.
