COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The latest installment of the Harpoon Leviathan Series was brewed in the centuries-old tradition of Czech and Bohemian brewers. Harpoon Big Bohemian is a large lager with a clean maltiness and a huge aromatic hop character. Continental Pilsner, pale two-row, and Carafoam malt was used to brew this big, strong beer, true to the Leviathan Series. Pilsner malt is the classic ingredient of this classic style and the Carafoam malt produces a nice, frothy head. This malt mixture combined with Czech Saaz hops, the quintessential hop of the style, yields an assertive but not overly aggressive beer. The finish is dry with a lingering floral hop character.

Pours a light golden color with a little white head. Smells all like a strong lager mostly, you can tell it is gonna be boozy. However, the taste is not as boozy as you would expect from a beer with this much booze in it. Somewhat spicy, a little grassy and earthy. Some hop bitterness. Overall easy, maybe too easy to drink, big beer.

Draught at Capone’s: Aroma of pils malts, slight alcohol, and noble hops. Poured gold in color with a small white head. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of noble hops, pils malts, slight grass, and light grains. Medium body. Slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, lightly sweet, noble hop finish is dry. 9%ABV is undetectable.

Bottle. Gold with a thin head. Quiet soft hoppy nose. Big pepper taste, followed by BBQ?, then booze. This is a confused boozy beer. Hard to Imperialize such a delicate style.

Tap at Capones. Pours a lightly hazy golden yellow with a large foamy white head. Aroma of spicy hop notes, sweet cereal grains, light lemon, earthy and herbal. Flavor of ripe banana, Cheerios, light citrus and some spicy hop notes. Too much banana for a lager let alone a Pilsner.

UPDATED: MAR 2, 2013 A: Golden yellow body. Thin cap with moderate lacing. S: Bright floral hops dominate. Slightly grainy. Faint bready malts. T: Disappointing after the promising nose. The floral hops were overwhelmed by the bready malts which rapidly escalated in prominence. M: Slightly chewy. Nicely carbonated. Clean finish. O: The bready characteristics impaired my overall enjoyment. Perhaps going for 9% was a bit too ambitious on the part of the brewers. (review from 2009)

(bottle - 12 oz) Clear gold pour with a fizzy white head. Aroma is sharp and citrusy with a good amount of sweet malts. Flavor is incredibly sweet and malty at the start with a warming middle of tons of malts, citrus, and a light floral hop taste. Finishes bitter and peppery.

Dull golden semi-hazy yellow pour with ring of offwhite head is not. Sweet floral hop profile is a little fruity almost. Somewhat spicy and buttercream. Soft malt character. Decent for the style I suppose, but nothing stellar. Spicy finish.
