COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Leviathan Great Scott pays homage to the celebrated Wee Heavy Scottish Ales of the past. This beer is a full-flavored, full-bodied dark ale with a complex malt character. The hint of smokiness is a tribute to the peated malts that were historically used in Scottish brewing. Relax and enjoy with bagpipes playing in your head (kilt optional).

Pours a two finger cream head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Nice crystal clear, deep amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Malty dark fruit nose and flavor is malty caramel, dark fruit and hints of alcohol. Decent Scotch ale. $3.60 for a 12oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.

Aroma is mildly peated malts, vinous notes and a hint of the alcohol. The flavor is thick malts, not overbearing but definitely there sweetness and a warming and alcoholic finish.

This beer truly is a beast. The malts really shine through, although there is a subtle smokiness in the after taste that lures you back for more.

Pours a dark amber with a smallish head. Really interesting level of maltiness to the smell of this one that also appears in the taste. A little harsh on the palate.

On draft. A bit mediocre in the amount of favor, though the present flavors were strong. Overall lacking in character compared to other wee heavy beers I’ve tried.

Location: 12 oz bottle from State Line, 8/7/12

Aroma: It has caramel, toffee, roasted malts, peat, alcohol, some spice (maybe nutmeg?), and fruity notes
Appearance: It pours a clear dark orange-mahogany color with a small beige head and good lacing
Flavor: It tastes mid-plus sweet, heavy malty, with some balance spice, alcohol flavors, and some dark fruit
Palate: The body is fairly full, with a slightly sticky texture, a smooth feel, light heat, and a lingering finish
Overall Impression: I was fairly impressed by this one, as I have been with quite a few of the beers from the Leviathan series. This is a near top of style example of a scotch ale for me. Thanks for ending a pretty long mediocre run of scotch ales for me Harpoon, this one reminds me of what this style can be. (This is the best one I’ve rated since Sheep Eater back in Feb of 2011.)
