COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

From 12oz bottle. Color is a rich, amber, opaque brown. A finger of off-white head. Aroma is big notes of meyer lemon and molasses, whiff of alcohol. Raisins. Flavor is orange rind, pine resin, plums and sherry. Sweet to start from from the warming malts, but a solid a bitter finish. Lots going on here, but kept in a very workable balance. Viscous, like dessert wine in feel.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is a clear coppery gold with a very thin, quickly dissipating, white head and a good amount of spotty lace. The aroma is surprisingly sweet. There is an undertone of hoppiness, but for the most part, it's quite sweet. I like the subtle honey character that's present. The flavor is surprisingly bitter. There is a good hoppiness and wonderful honey sweetness that comes in on the back end. I feel this would probably be better fresh. The mouth feel is lightly creamy, and slightly thin. The aftertaste is sweet, and dry, which is different than I'd expect for an IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours clear orange/gold with lots if carbonation. 2 fingers of head that dissipates quickly. Decent bitter hop and piney aroma and bite, balanced malt finish, not overly sweet. Better than I expected, as I'm not a big harpoon standard IPA fan ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Great citrus hop aroma, flavor of orange, grapefruit and spices. Very confused as to why this is not already on RB.

Nice looking beer. Clear orange with a nice white foamy head which leaves a good bit o’ lacing. Aroma is certainly hoppy; spruce and grass for sure. Flavor is sweet and hoppy; grapefruit and fruit, smooth with a crisp dry bitter finish.

Very balanced ipa. Copper amber colored poured from a tap. Nice mix of hops and sweet caramel taste. Awesome beer.

Pretty powerful double IPA. Strong piney and floral aroma, some malty sweetness. Copper color with a sizeable cream head. Average weight palate with strong carbonation. Hops bitterness up front, which lingered quite a bit. Malty backbone barely supports it. A little caramelized sweetness in the middle followed by more bitterness. A little bit of an alcohol bite as well. Good strong stuff.

Bottle. A gift from a friend. Best by is 1/14/14. However, I think this is a bit beyond its prime. Pours a clear amber orange with a decent off white creamy head. Smell is heavy sweet caramel malts, little citrus and touch earthy hops. Taste is big caramel sweetness, medium to heavy sweet for IIPA, pretty big bitterness, more citrus, touch pine. Not my style of ipa.

Rated on 6-13-2009 (Bottle) When poured, this beer forms a medium sized white head with good retention, transparent body with a yellow hue, good amount of lacing, and slow rising carbonation. The Aroma is caramel malt, citrus and grapefruit hops. The Taste is quite bitter, malty, citrus, and grapefruit hops. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is very hoppy tasting which is true to style, one for hop heads, and is a bit too hoppy tasting for my liking. A beer I recommend trying.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2013 Smells like straight orange juice. Heavy tropical fruit taste upfront. Big hop taste. Feel is a little cheap. Kind of boozy. Still pretty good.
