Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Poured from bottle into pint glass: Pours clear golden-amber with a thin white head. Aroma of caramel, floral hops, malt sweetness. Taste is very sweet, lots of bitter hops kicking in at the end, slight citrus taste, lots of floral. Medium to heavy body, a bit cloying, overly sweet, decent carbonation. Either this is an old bottle or its a super-sweet IPA. Not my favorite, I’ll stick with Rich and Dan’s.

From bottle. Pours a nearly clear dark honey color with a white head and a good amount of lacing. Aroma is mango and tropical fruits, with pine and citrus and floral hop qualities as well. The flavor is rather sweet, very malty, similar to the aroma. Aftertaste leaves a pleasant bitterness.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a golden hazy orange colored body that leaves a one finger white foamy head settling to a lumpy bubbly film and leaves some nice lacing. No carbonation is seen rising. The smell had a separated fruity/maltiness from the hops, both are there, but mostly distinct at different times. The taste was way more combined between the flavors. The palate was a bit sharp and about a medium, sessionable, uh maybe perhaps. Overall, I actually thought this was going to be pretty good but sadly I had an old bottle that could have been the cause of being a mediocre beer.

From 12oz bottle. Color is a rich, amber, opaque brown. A finger of off-white head. Aroma is big notes of meyer lemon and molasses, whiff of alcohol. Raisins. Flavor is orange rind, pine resin, plums and sherry. Sweet to start from from the warming malts, but a solid a bitter finish. Lots going on here, but kept in a very workable balance. Viscous, like dessert wine in feel.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. The pour is a clear coppery gold with a very thin, quickly dissipating, white head and a good amount of spotty lace. The aroma is surprisingly sweet. There is an undertone of hoppiness, but for the most part, it's quite sweet. I like the subtle honey character that's present. The flavor is surprisingly bitter. There is a good hoppiness and wonderful honey sweetness that comes in on the back end. I feel this would probably be better fresh. The mouth feel is lightly creamy, and slightly thin. The aftertaste is sweet, and dry, which is different than I'd expect for an IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
