COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoonís proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beerís massive aroma.

MAP (1133) - Lakewood, Ohio, USA - MAR 30, 2009
Single purchased at Roziís in Lakewood. Ya know when you pour a beer without paying too much attention, and its a little rougher than you might like. Then the head keeps growing and growing like some middle school science experiment? Thatís what I did. After a rather lousy evening some strong brew seems in order, but I canít even pour it properly. But thankfully the beer gods, of which-ever gods are involved, smiled upon me and this rose perfectly to the top and stopped, giving the perfect look of a hazy amber with a big ol cream head on top. Aroma is a pretty joyous pine perfection. A rough swirl opens up the floral perfume which is ever so enjoyable. The flavor does not translate quite as well for me. The flavor comes off a little... almost soapy. It is very citusy and sweet at first, bitter at the end, but leaves a semi-soapy flavor at the end. Overall, not that bad. I find myself staring at and smelling it...then taking a big drink. Although it has been that kind of day.

From bottle. Fantastic hoppy aroma with spice. Good looking orange colour with a great frothy big head. Medium carbonation. Syrupy, Oily texture. The hops cut through the palette to create an intense tangy explosion of bitterness. Sharp citrus finish. Tasty IPA.

12oz bottle pours a transparent, orange with a frothy, active lacing white head. Aroma is as advertised, big American hop aroma, citrus, pine, flowers, grapefruits, candy, sweet caramel malts. Flavor is similar, more citrus fruits, now the pine comes in with a little bit of soap, sweet and clean malts, some light cracker. Finish is excessively bitter and lacks a bit of sweetness that rounds out the best DIPAs. By the aroma, look and most of the flavor you might think you were drinking Nugget Nectar, the finish is a bit of a let down though. Still, quite a pleasant surprise from one of my favorite breweries.

Bottle pours orange/amber color with off white head. Aroma is mainly citrus and pine with a touch of caramel malt. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is a sharp hop bite upfront consisting of pine, and finishes with a pucker from the pine. Slight caramel malt follows after the pucker. A nice brew overall, but not as biting or as well rounded as other IIPAís.

Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is of citrus and pine hops with some caramel malts. Nice citrus and pine hop flavor blended with the malts. Not overly hoppy and not overly sweet either. Pretty decent.

Nephilium (1323) - Ohio, USA - MAR 23, 2009
Nice big strong hop aroma starts this one of. Pours a clear orange/amber, with a thin cap of white head. The taste is a touch of caramel sweetness that gets quickly overtaken with pine, citrus, and a touch of tropical fruit. Moderately long bitter finish, and a full mouthfeel round this one out. Tasty, but for the price, Iíll go Hopslam or Double Trouble.

12oz bottle. Good hop presence with nice bitter aftertaste. Very well done double IPA.

Bottle (12oz). Bright clear deep amber pour, large lasting off-white creamy/fluffy head - thick lacing, too. Terrific resin/pine/grapefruit aroma, slightly mango-sweet, only mild alcohol - solid, just the thing. The taste carries the sweet tropical fruit, slightly overripe, but the bitterness is simpler, drier - resin and grapefruit pith, a little boozy. Average body, astringent and mildly carbonated, very long pithy bitter linger. Solid dIPA, and nice to have it in a smaller bottle.

Bottle. Clear orange pour with a frothy moderate off-white head leaving spotty lacing. Big hop aroma, marked by citrus and tropical fruit. Clean vaguely sweet malts properly submissive to the grapefruit, orange and resin hop infusion. Big citrusy character. Lingering bitterness on the tongue. A fine example of the style. One of the top two, if not the best Harpoon Iíve tried.

Growler, thanks for the pick up blankboy and hogtown harry! Shared with the K-W crew at our second monthly tasting. Orange pour, not much head. Tons of hops in aroma - you could smell this from across the room. Lovely. Taste is almost overwhelming. Hop juice, resiny with a gigantic alcohol punch. Body is medium to thin which makes that punch even bigger. Oily oily oily! I love the brashness of this beer. It would have killed me to drink the growler by myself! I wonít say it is balanced or a session beer, or the most complex, but the world needs beers like this - sometimes, this is just what you feel like having.
