COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Two bottles (12oz each) shared with swoopjones, garthicus, rudolf and DougShoemaker -- courtesy of swoopjones. Pours a clear deep orange with a small diminishing white head. Nice resiny, citrusy hops aroma, backed by caramel malt. Flavour, also of resiny hops is simple yet tasty -- There’s a good amount of hops there: resiny, piney and citrusy. Nice bitter finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good, especially for Harpoon, I quite liked it.

The appearance is an orange color, thin white head. Slightly less red than a IIPA normally is. The aroma is strong citrusy/grapefruit hops. The flavor is almost pure hops, a mixture of citrus and piney hops. Some brown sugar and malt sweetness as it warms, but not enough to be great. The hops leave a tingling throughout the entire mouth and palate long after drinking the beer. The IIPA is a great style, and this is simply a good beer. Or rather, relatively mediocre beer in this great style.

Pours clear gold with a one inch head of white. Retention is moderate, with the head fading to a skim coat within two minutes. Aromatics are fairly pungent and piney. Grapefruit, melons, and spruce resin follow through with a hint of butterscotch. Medium bodied and a bit chewy. A creamy and crisp mouthfeel. Pine dew, spruce bark, melon rinds, and grapefruit start the palate. Light malt, warming alcohol, and buttery undertones follow through. Bitterness is firm and lingering, and the brew is nicely drying. Finishes with a sustaining bitterness, warming alcohol, shades of grapefruit zest and conifer tannins. Pretty damn tasty. One of Harpoons best in my book. The hopping is pretty agressive, and this is a big beer. I prefer a more tropical, floral type hop profile though, and the buttery undertones detract.

Pour was straw yellow and left a nice frothy head. Aroma was floral with obvious hops. Flavor was very good, slick mouthfeel, LOTS of hops, grapefruit and a warming alcohol finish. A very solid Imperial IPA, thanks to Cletus for provdiing this as a bonus bottle on a recent trade.

Poured from bottle. Deep reddish-orange color with a decent sized head. Pine and citrus galore on the nose. On the palate it actually begins with a hint of bread before progressing into the predictable citrusy hops. Ends with the pine flavor (the resin perhaps) that was present on the nose. More balanced than Id expected, but still far too hoppy for my tastes. A good example of the style, though.

Draft from Capones. Wow did Harpoon step it up for this one. Poured a clear orange with a large white frothy head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Very balanced flavor of citrus rind, bread, fresh floral hops, caramel malts and even more hops. A very respectable DIPA. Glad I grabbed a growler of this one and it held up nicely for when I cracked it a whole whooping week later.

Hoppy nose, orange, piney and plenty of malt. Dark sunset orange, small custard head. Flavour is a smashing citrus, mostly red grapefruit, some pine is there, and the malt again is suitably allied with the hops. Full bodied, resiny, a palate pleaser. Terrific. Thanks for sharing swoopjones.

Bottle from capones. Pours an orange amber body with a 1 finger white head. Big hop character with grapefruit and citrus. Big sweet malty backbone and a big alcohol finish.

Thanks to Dmac for sharing a growler of this. Pours out a clear orangy/light copper color with a small mostly white lacing head. Aroma is of citrus hops with a slight floral note, also a little sweetness was noticeable. Taste is citrus hops, floral hops and some sticky sweet malts going on in there too, decent amount of balance with a dry, bitter and slightly alcoholic finish. Not a bad effort.
