Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Bottle from Chris. Aroma of sugary malts, floral hops, and fruity esters. Pours a translucent orange amber with a foamy pale yellow white head and spotty lacing. Medium bodied and average carbonation. Flavor of pale malts with some toastiness, countered by a piney bitterness. Average amount of residual sweetness. Lingering grapefruit bitterness. Not bad, but not very cohesive and hop profile is not that exciting.

Tap @ brewery. I really enjoyed this one. A strong but not overpowering floral aroma with a hint of citrus. A bright orange-golden color. The flavor is intense, very hoppy and bitter but still very drinkable. This one’s a sipping beer, it really can hit you hard. Nonetheless, a great beer for those who enjoy lots of hop flavor.

Pours yellowish with white head. Not so nice. Aroma with tons of bitter citrus, honey, some flowery notes, and slight herbal tones. Flavor is resiny citrus, grapefruit and lemon, with a long bitter finish. Slight caramel in the background, but very little malt to speak of. Decently full palate. Very bitter.

Strong hop aroma with big hints of citrus. Clear light orange color with a small white head. Sweet hop flavor in the beginning with a finish that gets moderately bitter.

12oz bonused from RCL and Tweety. Pours orange with a 2 finger tan bubbly head. Nose is sweet and some what soapy. Taste is sweet and somewhat citrussy. Overall ok, but not good by west coast standards.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours a slightly hazy amber golden with a small, off-white head. Fresh hop aroma - citrus and pine. Quite full-bodied with caramel and fruit and a distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish. 010209

Good citrus and floral aroma even detected a hint of bubblegum? The flavor is a bit less potent and complex than the aroma but that isn’t particularly unusual. Astringent bitterness on the end. Nice mouthfeel and good body without being too heavy. No trace of alcohol. This definitely rises above the normal Harpoon offering and actually stands up very well against the Founders Double Trouble I just had. I definitely wasn’t expecting this.

Pours a clear darker golden with a small white froth. Peachy grapefruit aroma with some toasted caramel malts, slightly perfumy. First taste is big salty hops, bit of piney bitterness, very salty, light caramel and citrus. Fruity finish. Very smooth medium body, creamy mouthful with fine soft fizzling carbonation. A solid well balanced brew but nothing new or really interesting. Does a good job not seeming like a 10% beer.

Pours a golden amber color with a nice slightly off-white head (very slightly). Aroma is citrusy and has a piny hop smell. The beer has a sweet bready malt undertone all the way through. The hops come out hard in the bitter finish and there is also a bitter aftertaste soon after. Full feel to the beer, but not too thick. The taste is not overly complex, but the beer is very drinkable and all the flavors are done very right.
