Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2013 USA bottleAroma-very rich with a flowery spice and hops.Appearance-deep amber orange with a thin light head which disappeared quickly with little lacing.Taste-comes on strong and bitter, heavily laden with hops. More forceful than subtle or complex though certainly not bad.Palate-lightly carbonated not rough on the tongue but also not the smoothest either.Overall-a bold flavored ipa, a good one to try but not one i would likely search out.

A - pours reddish orange with no head. No lacing. S - candied citrus, citrus hops and soap lead to a solid caramel malt and dried fruits/grains (dog food). Hint of sweet tropical fruits and damp vegetation. M - wow, such a quiet dipa. So mellow. Medium body to flat middle. Low carb, sticky sweet end. T - quick soapy and candied citrus hops to a growing malt backbone. Caramel and bready malts. Very grainy with a hint of dark dry fruits. Very vegetal end. O - pretty good. Simple and quiet, but gets too malty as it warms. 3.3

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle dated Best By 10/15/13. The pour is a well carbonated golden amber. The aroma has a nice malty sweetness with floral hops evening it off. The body is medium to bold. The taste has an incredibly sweet maltiness up front like caramel and toffee and then the punchy hop bitterness roars in from behind. With each sip the hops get bolder. Excellent dry bitterness on the backside. This beer evolves as it nears the end.

On tap @ the brewery. Pours an amber orange color with a thick foamy off white head. Aroma caramel malt and citrus hops. Taste was similar. Sweet malts, citrus, and a big alcohol bite in the finish.

Pours a lovely red-brown with a thick tan head up top. Lively resin hop aroma with hints of alcohol as it warms. Bitter hops dominate the flavor as well, but sweet malt comes though at first. It feels very heavy in the mouth, almost like a stout, save the carbonation. Astringent aftertaste with some alcohol burn.

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured clear deep orange with a nice off white head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is piney and fruity, some malts there too. Taste is actually sweet (I was not expecting this from a DIPA), some fruit flavors that are very well balanced with a nice bitterness from hops the high ABV is also very well hidden. Very nice beer, super enjoyable.

Purchased at Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA, enjoyed in Roxbury while trying to watch the new Arrested Development. Appearance is a dark gold, relatively clear, no head. Aroma has an aggressive hop profile, bit of alcohol / port smell, light plum, bit unusual for the style. Taste is abrasive and goes down harsh. Huge hop profile, there is a crisp malt factor to it as well. Overall it's pretty good, definitely packs a punch.

UPDATED: MAY 17, 2013 Aromas of amontillado sherry, amaretto, vanilla, purple grapes, tropical and citrus fruit, pine, and subtle alcohol. Clear orange-copper with a moderately lasting, off-white head. Slightly sweet, savory, and bitter, with hints of sourness. Medium-full body, low carbonation, strong, and with a sticky, fruity, bittersweet finish. Very much an American barleywine but with a lower ABV.

UPDATED: APR 30, 2013 Pours copper with perfect clarity. A finger of foam that doesn’t last to a thin ring and skin on top. Fair retention and pretty good lace. It’s rather pretty actually because of the orange glow in the color. Nose is grand. Delectable malt! Caramel, biscuit, nuts. Fruity tropical hops, pineapple, mango, grass, sweet pine and an all over earthy scent. The malt opens up as it warms with lots of bread and a graceful honey sweetness. Taste is superb. Tropical fruits with a touch of floral, fat malt character. Bread and biscuit, nuts, and honey. Pale and caramel malt abounds in the taste. Smooth and very drinkable. The hops leave a nice oil and bitter leading into the finish. There is a touch of alcohol on the palate before a nice dry aftertaste and a full on hop bitter that coats the throat with just a touch of sweetness underneath.

What a surprise this was. A real malt treasure of an Imperial IPA. Graceful, drinkable, delicious, fruity, gentle and fat. Has many tea like qualities that make it very attractive to the palate. It has everything an IPA should have in the way of hop grandeur and bitter and everything favorable from it’s malt character. Cheerful and loaded with colossal malt. In my opinion, this comes up pretty close to Alchemy Hour.
