0,33l Flasche aus Boston. Dunkles Gelb, wenig Schaum. Im Aroma viel hopfen und Getreide. Der Geschmack ist im Antrunk Getreidig malzig. Dann kommt der Hopfen. Abgang bitter. Ein sehr kanntiges, eigenwilliges Bier! Gefällt mir!

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[from July 2012 notes].
Undated bottle served at about recommended temperature (40F) in a Unibroue snifter. Some sediment at bottom of bottle added mid-taste.
Appearance: Copper-amber color with a light haze; Nice looking light brown head is rather short-lived but leaves some sticky lacing.
Smell: Rye and other malts with a good bit of aroma like that of red wine? (better than this may sound). A bit of yeasty/bread aroma. Hint of high ABV (becomes more obvious with warming) and earthy hops.
Taste: Spicy; with good balance of sweet and bitter, and a little tartness. Has a fruity, fermented grape trait. Some grapefruit bitter in the finish and aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Near medium body seems a tad watery; medium-light carbonation; Some alcohol warming and tongue bite. Slightly dry finish.
Overall: Complex and interesting, if not terribly appealing. An unusual rye, for sure. Worth a try.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle, 2011 Vintage: Pours a dark ruby red with a nice white head. Stron aroma of alcohol, toffee and grass. Taste is heavy on the alcohol, does not hide it’s 8.9% well at all. Nice thick rye body and sprucy hops. Astringent on the palate but has smoothed compared to when it was fresh.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
12oz bottle. Pours dark burgundy with a fluffy white head. Sweet candy sugar, rye and alcohol flavors. Not impressed with this one and not up to par with the others in the Leviathan series.

1.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 2/20
In short: An extremely harsh and overall atrocious burgundy with too many problems to list them all
How: Bottle 12oz, consumed relatively fresh one month after purchase
The look: Clear copper-red body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose is rather timid with straightforward notes of dried rye bread and light notes of nail polish remover. Taste is surprisingly harsh. This is like drinking shredded paper, crunchy dry unmalted rye cereals, melted barley candy and band-aids. And all that tied together with a mixture of cooking oil and rubbing alcohol. This is was some pretty nasty stuff, this had to be a bad bottle, but I won’t give this another try, no sir. This is not my first major disappointment from the Harpoon Leviathan, and the people at Harpoon should know I consider that revenge is a dish best served boiling hot and thrown directly in the face.
