COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

UPDATED: OCT 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear orange with a thick light tan head. Aroma of bitter grassy hops, banana. Flavor of the same bitter grassy hops, some wheat, a nice malt backbone, and lots of banana. Alcohol is well hidden. Quite hoppy and quite tasty!

Bottle. Aroma of pine and orange-perfume hops, increasing mango also as it warms. Flavor of those hops, juicy indeed, and a strong malt base with a toffee crunch character. Mild hop (pine) and slight alcohol bite at the finish. Very nice.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2009 Pours a nice copper, not much head. Aroma is hops. Very nice hops flavor, alcohol is very well masked for 10%. Didn’t expect much from Harpoon, but this was a fantastic imperial IPA.

12 oz bottle. Clear amber with a puffed off-white head. Nose is pineapple, orange and pine. Fresh and juicy. Silky body, almost syrupy, with fine carb to lighten. Delicious orange, pineapple, mango and bubblegum play off a nice hoppy bite but not resiny. Bitter buzzy finish after the sweetness fades. Dangerously drinkable.

12oz. Bottle: Aroma of hops, grapefruit, caramel, a little toasting, pineapple, resin, and a hint of pine. Poured amber/orange in color with a medium-sized, off-white/tan, dense, rocky, head that mostly diminished. Clear. Not sparkling. Very good lacing. Flavor is heavily bitter and lightly sweet. Tastes of hops, grapefruit, alcohol, resin, caramel, and citrus. Medium body. Medium body. Slightly sticky, smooth texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, alcohol, hop, and resin finish. Delicious.

Fresh bottle from the brewery. Pours mostly clear and shows a sparkling orange-amber color with a tight, foamy, off-white head. Some nice, sticky, ribbony lace marks the glass well. The aroma leaps forward with big, sharp grapefruit and orange juice, with perhaps a hint of mango and a touch of bitter grassiness. A lightly sweet toffee and biscuit malt billing shows in the background, but there’s no mistaking this one for having a hop dominant nose. Flavors continue along the massively hoppy and juicy path, with bright and fresh citrus shining throughout. Grapefruit, orange, lemon and mango are all featured prominently, yet blended in a manner such that no particular varietal dominates. The light toffee sweetness is just enough to stave off astringency. Big and well carbonated in the mouth, there is no annoying cloyingness or alcoholic burn. This is a great IIPA that fits the mold of a San Diego style hop bomb. Great brew!

Pours a clear golden copper with a medium sized beige head. Perfumy aroma with notes of piney resin, apricot mango and plenty of hops. Taste is hoppy with a piney perfume flavor and hints of mango and apricot. Quite big, yet tasty.

Bottle from Capone’s that I just poured. The pour is chill hazy dark straw toward copper, with 2-fingers of uniform, vanilla-milkshakey white head. Nose is juicy fruity hops, citrus, with piney and funky notes. Nice nose on this. Tastes very hoppy, somewhat dry, with a definite juicy hop profile, some caramel malt (but not quite enough of a malt bill), and some peppery, mango, and scotchy notes. Smooth, crisp, and dry, this one is very good, but I get some late plasticy flavors (that I get, sadly, wth all Harpoon beers) and fusel flavors, that I am compelled to lower this rating a tenth or so. Not world class, but very good nonetheless.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2008 Pours deep amber into a shaker. Bright white micro head with excellent retention recedes to skim surface leaving spot lacing. Perfume, resin and pine aromas. Well balanced with upfront malt with a turn to a burning astringent resin middle. Lasting alcohol and resin burn.
