Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

11/5/08 notes: on tap, Eli Cannon’s. Pours gold, with a medium-sized head. Aroma dominated by sharp, grassy-floral hops. Surprisingly bold for a Harpoon brew! Palate is crisp, and finish is predictably long given the alcohol and mouth-coating hop-juice. I generally enjoyed Leviathan, being a hophead, by inevitably I found myself docking points from it because of another “similar” brew I had just prior: Great Divide’s Fresh Hop. Compared to the latter, Leviathan lacked balance, as I thought the its hoppy profile too nearly became a one-sided assault. Nevertheless, I now can mark Harpoon as yet another brewery that has successfully created a quality Impy IPA.

Draft @ tiedhouse. Golden color with a big sweet hop aroma with citrus, melons, and floral notes. Flavor is big, hoppy and sugary - lots of citrus, cantaloupe, pine....malt balance is nice as well. Solid mouthfeel - easily the best Harpoon I’ve had

Pours gold with a nice whote head. Smells of citrus and dry malt. Tastes astringent and citrussy with a peppery finish.

(Bottle). Citrus hops aroma. Clear orange body, smallish off-white head. Taste is fresh grapefruit and tangerine, with a nice bite. Alcohol is a bit intrusive. The finish is peculiar....not quite bitter, more like spicy and bittersweet. Overall, good but not great.

Big beer. Alcohol relatively well hidden. Definitely a pleasant surprise from Harpoon. Extremely hoppy. Nose full of grapefruit hops. Flavor much of the same, very bitter though, not as crisp as I wanted. Good, but not great.

Bottle thanks to jjpm74. Pours a copper color with shiet head. Nose of pine, citurs and sweet malt. Flavor has a good hit of hops up front with a good chunch of sweet malt that follows. Body is thick with syrup and high alcohol that warms the body.

Tap at Barcade. Deep golden amber beer with a thin white head. Aroma is quite fruity and hoppy. Lots of bright pine and soft grapefruity citrus. Flavour is soft and quite hoppy. The hoppiness is quite nice and shows good flavour. Fairly sweet palate with a lot of fruity hoppiness. It’s big and boozy and while it’s got some nice components, it’s just a bit too sweet for me.

Bottle - Poured a clear orange-amber in color with a small white head that quickly faded to almost nothing. It did, however, manage to produce a small amount of lacing on the glass. Aroma is all hops... mostly citrus. Flavor is initially all hops, but a quite strong malty backbone appears quickly to balance everything out. The alcohol, although considerable according to the label and in its effects, was definitely not apparent... a *dangerously delicious* beer... but one that I will willingly take on as often as I can! The is the best that Harpoon has offered... really good...

Bottle poured into a snifter produced a large white head that lasted for a while before turning to lace . The body on this ale was clear and amber in color Aromas are big hops, pine and citrus, typical DIPA nose This has slight malt sweetness to it before you get to the strong hop flavors. the brew ends up being thick and oily with its light carbonation A good DIPA I didn’t find too much alcohol in the aroma or flavors. So I would believe you could get into trouble with drinking too many of these.

12oz. Clear honey/amber pour with a creamy head. Grassy aroma with a citrus zest backdrop. Pine and resin and enough sweetness to balance. Pretty ordinary but decent and definitely balanced, at least more balanced than expected. Flavor is less exciting. Big hoppy, bitter finish. Hops, mushy malt, to bitter to dusty, and then back to juicy. Kind of strange to me. Very decent. I’m not a harpoon fan in general, but nicely done.
