Formerly known as Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA.

We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Bottle poured into a snifter produced a large white head that lasted for a while before turning to lace . The body on this ale was clear and amber in color Aromas are big hops, pine and citrus, typical DIPA nose This has slight malt sweetness to it before you get to the strong hop flavors. the brew ends up being thick and oily with its light carbonation A good DIPA I didn’t find too much alcohol in the aroma or flavors. So I would believe you could get into trouble with drinking too many of these.

12oz. Clear honey/amber pour with a creamy head. Grassy aroma with a citrus zest backdrop. Pine and resin and enough sweetness to balance. Pretty ordinary but decent and definitely balanced, at least more balanced than expected. Flavor is less exciting. Big hoppy, bitter finish. Hops, mushy malt, to bitter to dusty, and then back to juicy. Kind of strange to me. Very decent. I’m not a harpoon fan in general, but nicely done.

Bottle shared generously by footbalm. Pours a clear copper color with a small white head. The aroma is full of powerful hop notes; mostly grapefruit, some caramel malts too. The flavor was a real hop bomb; loads of strong grapefruit and perfume infused hops. Not super bitter, but loads of flavors. Some light caramel malts also. Not bad at all, very enjoyable. Not very hot for 10% for sure.

12oz bottle from DrDogBeer. Pours hazy brilliant amber with a thin white head, some lace. Smells potent... Hoppy resiny with some nice pine and citrus, maybe a touch of malt. Tastes resiny and citrusy hoppy with a solid malt backbone. Definitely an East Coast hop bomb though. Lots of nice hop flavor, nice and bitter. Full body, good carbonation.

Bottle: Pours a clear copper color with a sizeable white head. Aroma has massive amounts of stanky-ass, wet floral and resin hops with a bit of caramel malt there as well...additional citrus notes came through as it warmed. I definitely see where Doclock is coming from in regards to the plastic-y flavors on this, though they aren’t horribly apparent. Flavors consist of bitter pine, mangoes, peaches and some caramel covered flowers. All in all a good brew. Thanks John for the bottle.

Bottle pours a translucent copper amber with a large foamy off white sticky lacing head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, hop resin, floral, piney, orange peel and tropical fruits. Flavor of pine resin, grapefruit, sweet caramel malt, banana, mixed citrus, flower petals, bready notes, a little sticky, abv well hidden. This was a solid double IPA.

UPDATED: OCT 7, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear orange with a thick light tan head. Aroma of bitter grassy hops, banana. Flavor of the same bitter grassy hops, some wheat, a nice malt backbone, and lots of banana. Alcohol is well hidden. Quite hoppy and quite tasty!

Bottle. Aroma of pine and orange-perfume hops, increasing mango also as it warms. Flavor of those hops, juicy indeed, and a strong malt base with a toffee crunch character. Mild hop (pine) and slight alcohol bite at the finish. Very nice.
