COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is not your traditional red ale. Leviathan Red Squared is aggressively hopped with Galaxy and Citra over a California ale yeast. The end result is an intense hop experience, with ?oral and citric notes, paired with a mellow malt bill. Some would call it imperial. We prefer Red, Squared.

Pours a hazy amber with a light fizzy head. Aroma is just slightly citrusy. Flavor is WOW. Not what I expected at all. American Strong Ale? More like Imperial IPA. Hoppy citrus, lemongrass...very floral. Beautiful.

12 ounce bottle from Nikki’s Liquors. Pours a clear copper color with a large frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of toffee and caramel malts with herbal and resin hops. The taste is citrus and resin hops, some earthiness, and toffee malts. Medium bodied and refreshing. Nice.

On tap at Battleship. Pours a clear deep amber color with a thick white head. Aroma is full of hops and grapefruit up front with some leather and orange. Flavor is an explosion of grapefruit, hops and citrus. There’s also a little dough and grain in the back end. Leaves a hoppy citrus finish. Good stuff here.

Pours light mahogany into a snifter. White head receded to hug rim. Dark caramel and resin aromas. Medium bodied and dry with dark toffee and molaases upfront turning to bitter resin on the lasting earthy finish.

The hops dominated this beer, however there were hints of caramel and cinnamon (?), as well as citrus. Not bad.

A clear dar brown ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with light molasses. In mouth, a smooth sweet caramel with cinnamon notes, butterscotch, fruity esters, a bit cloying. On tap at Sunset Grill, July 15, 2012.

The aroma is very hoppy with pine and citrus as well as yeast and caramel malt. The appearance is amber with a large foamy head. The taste is very bitter and astringent with pretty much hops dominating a caramel malt. The palate is smooth. Overall I like whats here but it’s way to boozy and astringent.

On tap at Sunset Grill - Allston, MA. Aroma is tropical and full of caramels. I’m finding it tough to parse caramel from tropical hop fruit. This reminds me of a citron-flavored caramel. Really rich and intense with sugar aromas. Flavors are decent, but as with a lot of Harpoon brews the intense filtering manages to strip out a lot of flavor, complexity, and depth in my opinion. Juicy finish. The caramel richness persists, but there’s something missing. Something raw and elemental.
