3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Shag (2283) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - MAR 25, 2004
Appearance is solid black with a moderate head. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, and grapes. Flavor is somewhat tame. Some bitter chocolate and caramel notes are present. Mouthfeel is rather thin. A very light example of a dunkel but a solid beer nonetheless.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 fasteddieIX (55) - Rochester, New York, USA - MAR 6, 2004
Served on tap at the Union Oyster Bar in Boston. Pours a slightly translucent black, with faint aromas of hops and sugar. The flavor is slightly sweet, with nutty tones to it. I found it to be a bit watery, but this may be due to the chilled glass it was served in (argh!). In any event, I found it to be quite enjoyable. Worth trying.

This was actually quite tasty and very drinkable. This would be a great session ale. Lots of caramel and toffee toasted flavors, with some slight chocolate coffee roasted flavors. Slightly nutty, with just a hint of vanilla in the finish. Worth trying.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Hangover (937) - Atlanta, USA - FEB 15, 2004
Dark reddish brown pour with a lasting, yet thin white head. Roasted malt aroma with some caramel. Taste is surprisingly bold, with chocolate, toffee, caramel and a smooth mouthfeel. I'm no expert on Dunkels, but this reminds me more of a nut brown ale or one of the less robust porters. Regardless, it's still pretty darned good. Not as good after warming however. Recommended.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20 rabuc (143) - carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 5, 2004
my first harpoon! a deep dark, clear brew with a light tan head. lacing was detected. tasted chocolatey/malty at first with a slight hoppy finish. this is a good munich-dark beer. can't wait to sample the rest of my harpoon variety pack....!
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 btwhite7 (37) - Lexington, Kentucky, USA - JAN 25, 2004
Very nice deep color. Disappointed with the head and carbonation. But will work. Decent lacing. Great aroma. One of the best...a chocolatey caramel. Fantastic. Tremendous initial flavor, but levels off to a slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall, a very good offering.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 beerluvindave (194) - Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 21, 2004
This dark is somewhat decieving... In my sampling, I found that it doesn't have a strong aroma and sits thin, but the color and the flavor reassure you that it is a decent beer.
