COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the centuries-old Bavarian beer, our Harpoon Munich Dark has a dark, balanced maltiness complimented with a moderate hop finish. We introduced this beer in 1998 and received first prize for Best Beer Overall of 1998 in BarleyCorn Magazine

Dark reddish-brown body topped with a medium thick head with good lace. Malty aroma with an oddly minty character and a touch of sweetness. Slightly smokey malt flavor with a touch of coffee/chocolate and a slight hop finish. Medium to full bodied and relatively smooth.

UPDATED: JUL 1, 2004 Tight, creamy Guiness-like head. Hop bitterness hits during initial taste, then dissipates quickly leaving a smoky malty swallow. Nice alchohol warming quality. A good example of a Dunkel.

Has a dark reddish brown color and a roasted smell. Taste is also roasted and finishes with moderate bitterness. Overall I did not like it too much, I seem to be steering away from the roasted flavor beers lately...

I didn’t really care for this. The maltiness is overpowering and not especially tasty, at that. It’s certainly not terrible, but just didn’t pique my interest.

Malty nose, alcohol, grain. Light tan head dissipates quick. Ruby brown hue. Really hopped up, some malt in there, but not much body wise. Needs some more malt, some chewiness would be nice. Not very complex, no depth for the style. Maybe next time.

The aroma is as good as it gets, with burnt chocolate. Great dark appearance, with a head that dissapates quickly. The initial sip says it’s going to be a great beer, but the middle and finish are missing something, almost not enough body to back up this dark. Overall it’s a good beer, as are all the Harpoon brews, but it I think it’s missing something. Re-Rate 5/3/02 Still missing something, and all I got was Banana in the aftertaste which I didn’t get the first time I sampled this brew. It lost some points for the weak middle and fruity aftertaste.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2003 About as malty as a schwarzbier with a hint of alcohol and far too hoppy for the Dunkel style. Decent but not great. Perhaps overly carbonated. Try the Saranac Black Forest instead.

A let down in flavor, as it looks decent and smells wonderful. At first sample, it’s got a great malty flavor, but it goes down hill from there. A bitter/hoppy aftertaste kicks in and doesnt go over very smooth. I was looking for a crisp finish and got a bitter look on my face. Still a decent beer all in all, just not what I expected.

Good full head, dies down too quickly though, dark color with a redish tint. Pushes the limit of what I consider a good amount of malt, but doesnt cross that limit. Has a nice hoppieness to complement it, overall a good solid beer, I will have it again.
