COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the centuries-old Bavarian beer, our Harpoon Munich Dark has a dark, balanced maltiness complimented with a moderate hop finish. We introduced this beer in 1998 and received first prize for Best Beer Overall of 1998 in BarleyCorn Magazine

Bottle and served in standard pint glass: Mahogany hued with fading frothy head and spotty lace. The aroma is massive caramel and liquorice, toast, light fig, grassy hops, and a hint of mineral water. The taste has a nice balance of sweet malt and twangy fruit with a snappy noble bitterness in support. The mouth feel is soft and a tad watery, metallic dryness on the finish. A pretty good Dunkel if you ask me, I almost finished the whole pint glass before I typed in my rating.

Draught at Rattle ’N’ Hum, as part of a flight of beers, on January 30, 2012
Clear dark brown color, tan head. Roasted, malty, banana scent. Malty, roasted taste. Smooth. Moussy mouthfeel, medium low bitterness.

Clear cherry stained oak color with a modest light tan head. Toasted malt and mild licorice aroma. Toasty malt flavors mingle with a mild spicy hops flavor. A touch too much licorice in the flavor for my taste in this style. Some nice toasted malt flavors help redeem. A decent brew for the fall, the leaves are already starting to fall. Thanks go out to DocLock.

Dark brown color. Large white foamy head. Aroma is coffee and toffee. A medium bodied Dunkel. Malts are nutty, chocolate and sweet. Hops are grapefruity. It’s a little hoppy for a dunkel, but it has a nice malt sweetness and balances out well. Smooth taste. Nice drinkable beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

HogTownHarry (4872) - Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, CANADA - JAN 19, 2006
Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, his bottle. Poured clear brown-ruby with a solid lasting straw head. Aroma of dry roast malt, straw, candyish caramel, maybe some stale hops, a bit lactic and quite sweet. Taste follows the nose but some sour cherry in there. Mouthfeel somewhat thin, lightly acidic, flat and candyish. Not a great dunkel - not a patch on the Denison.

Dogbrick (4842) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - NOV 26, 2003
Pours a dark ruby-brown with a thin light tan head. Very thin and quick lacing. Aroma of coffee along with a bit of chocolate. Medium body as well. This beer is a little sharp on the front buy mellows a bit later on. There is a blend of sweet malt, caramel, coffee and some hops in the flavor, but none in abundance. The finish is mildly bitter. Overall this beer seems kind of lackluster.

Bottle: Dark red -- light tn head. Very bitter aroma ... almost barley-wine-ish. The flavor is fairly robust ... bitter and sharp, a candied malt. This is one of those beers that grew on me more and more as I drank it ... pretty darn good.

Poured a burnt sienna color with a small off white head and had light lacing. Aroma of roasted malt. Nothing spectactular here, some roasted watery malts.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry. Pours a clear ruby-brown with an average size off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Mild watery flavour of roasted malt, caramel malt and a very mild hop bitterness. Light to medium bodied. It’s good but it’s nothing special, it needs more substance.
