Pour was dark as expected, with a nutty-tan head. Aroma is of hops with chocolate. Lacing is medium thin, but still visible. Flavor goes from chocolate to slightly metallic and then to strong coffee. VERY unique in regards to the order. Smooth finish with little carbonation and some hop. Will drink again, as a friend of Harpoon!

Pours out a rich, deep brown in color, almost like mahogany wood. it’s got a good foamy tan head on it which stays around for quite some time, and didn’t completely leave the glass the whole time I was drinking. Traces remained on the sides of the glass all the way down. The aroma is clearly dominated by the malts, like sweet coffee with hints of chocolate and caramel.
With a beer this dark, I usually expect a bold, hearty taste. Although I wasn’t quite disappointed, it wasn’t all I expected it to be either. The body and mouthfeel is medium where I would have expected a heavier brew. The taste of is coffee-like, as the aroma indicates, with hints of molasses, chocolate, and some fruitiness.
What I didn’t really like was the finish. There was a distinctly sour and somewhat acidic taste in the finish. It also contains a healthy amount of carbonation, more than what I usually like. This coupled with that sourness on the finish really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Dark mahogany or burnt umber in color. Mediium head that dissipates slowly. Aroma is bready, nutty. The malt is very evident here, with the hops keeping a low profile. Tastes sweet with a sour note and moderately bitter finish. There is also an interesting roasted nuts flavor here. Definitely a lot of flavor, but not overpowering. Medium body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this a damn good beer with a hell of a lot of character.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Davin (48) - Vermont, USA - MAY 21, 2008
Very dark brown with a quickly disappearing tan head. An aroma of malts and raisin/plum comes out when sloshed around the glass. The flavor is very subdued and lacks dimension but is pleasant enough.

Crystal clear deep red brown with generous tanhead whichfades quickly leaving good lacing. Primary flavor is roasted malt. Mildly sweet, no bitterness.

Very nice deep color. Disappointed with the head and carbonation. But will work. Decent lacing. Great aroma. One of the best...a chocolatey caramel. Fantastic. Tremendous initial flavor, but levels off to a slightly bitter aftertaste. Overall, a very good offering.

Great domestic example of a Munich dunkel. Rich malt profile without being overly sweet, overall a refreshing brew, one of Harpoons best offerings.

I'd put this one somewhere between a Dunkel and a Schwartzbier, personally. There's a bit too much sweetness to be a Dunkel for me. Great look, but the combination of sweetness and earthiness just doesn't work for me on this one. I've had it on tap and from a bottle, several times, and both times I've been left thinking that there was something missing.

Pours an opaque brown with a thin head, which disappeared quickly. Smoky aroma. Noticeable, but not overwhelming, hop flavor. Left a bitter, citrusy aftertaste. Decent, but certainly not one of my favorite darker beers.
