COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The original German Oktoberfest was brewed with one celebratory festival in mind. Harpoon Octoberfest is brewed with TWO festivals in mind; our Octoberfests at our breweries in Boston, MA and Windsor, VT. We love the style and it’s a great beer for the fall season. In true Octoberfest tradition, we threw our first festival here at the brewery in 1990. There were a couple thousand people here celebrating amidst the brewing tanks. We can’t quite fit everyone in the actual brewery now – last year nearly 18,000 revelers attended our Boston Octoberfest and nearly 7,000 joined us at our brewery in Vermont the following weekend. Prost!

Description
Harpoon Octoberfest is a malty tribute to fall, balanced by a gentle hop bitterness. In keeping with tradition, it is a Marzen-style beer, brewed with abundant quantities of Munich, Chocolate, and Pale malts. Those malts provide a solid, full body and create the beer’s deep color. It is a rich, flavorful beer.

12 Fl. Oz. Can. Poured clear, dark amber with a nice off white head. Strong malty aroma, some caramel and some yeast. Taste is very consistent, malts; caramel sweetness, some fruit notes and a very slight hoppiness towards the end. Nice, very drinkable beer, nice representation of the style.

12 ounce beer pours a reddish copper color. Off white creamy head that dissipates quickly. Sweet caramel aroma nothing from hops. Nicely balanced Oktoberfest beer very malty and Carmel flavor. Just enough hop bitterness for balance.

Pint on tap. Clear orange copper with a creamy film on top. Faint aroma of toffee and toasted walnut. Tastes of toasted nut, toffee apple and a touch of dry cocoa. Medium body is to the roasty side for the style and has medium carbonation.

Pours a light brown, plenty of carbonation and a bubbling head. Sharper malt aroma with a clean malt taste. Minimal aftertaste.

On draft at Isaac Newton’s. Ehh was a bit thin and lacked something. Some nice notes of caramel malt and mild chocolate. This body. Needs a boost of malt.

Bottle from Harvest Market. Clear golden color decent white head. Rich sweet bready pilsner with a hint of hop flavor. Nice enough marzen, better than some other versions I’ve had but still not quite as good as the German versions.

"This is average or just above from the style. Definitely hits the spot when the mood is right. Mic medium bodied blend of bread, caramel, nuts, spice, and a hint of hops. "

Transfer from BA review on 9-19-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance - The beer is served a reddish amber color boarding on copper with a one finger foamy white head. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a good leave of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a sweet caramel and toffee smell. Mixing with these more surgery smells are some aromas of bread, malt, and a bit of spice. Taste – The taste begins with a nice creamy bready malt base backed by a rather decent showing of a caramel sweetness. The caramel becomes more buttery in taste as the flavor advances, transitioning to a more toffee like taste. Some fruity flavors of a pear and apple develop more toward the middle of the taste with some spice hitting the tongue as well as a bit of roasted flavor. At the end some nutty flavors and a bit of grass joins the taste, in the end leaving a nice smooth, sweet, and malty flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. The lower carbonation was actually very nice for this brew as it accentuated the creamy feel as well as allowed all the more subtle flavors of spice, nut and grassiness to really stand out a bit more. Overall – A rather enjoyable Oktoberfest overall. It was a little on the maltier side, but was balanced nicely with a good base of sweet flavors and some lighter flavors of spice, nut and grass. A good one to try.

DATE TASTED: September 13, 2014... GLASSWARE: Ayinger willibecker...OCCASION: soccer weekend #1--a success... APPEARANCE: nice, dark amber body that supports a healthy, two-finger off-white head--creamy and frothy, and settles well; lacing is scarce .. AROMA: toasted malts compliment the cold rain outside; some bread, but the flowery hops round the malts to a more balanced fest than expected... PALATE: reasonably smooth and pleasant to drink; a bit chewy for a fest--an attribute of differentiation ...TASTE: malts are more sugary than what the aroma suggests; a bit of caramel and oats late; hops are balancing and lightly floral...OVERALL: stands out from other fests by performing a pleasant balancing act...

Caramel sweet mix of malts countered by roasted malts and some mild hops. Pretty standard Octoberfest. Better than the low-end stuff like the Yuengling Oktoberfest, the Ourtoberfest thing from Magic Hat a couple years ago that didn’t meet the style, that really off tasting Lienkengels Octoberfest from years ago that had no carbonation, or the horrid Shiner Oktoberfest, but still a notch or two below my favorite reasonably priced Octoberfest, Sam Adams. I think the Sam brings a bit more malt diversity. This is a little simpler, but not bad. Got it on sale at a great price. I wouldn’t hesitate to pick it up if you’re in the mood for this great style on a fall day and the price is right or the pickings are slim, but, if it’s between this and the Sam Adams version at a similar price, I’d go for the Sammy. I just happened to find this for much less.
