One of the longest beern names I’ve seen. Hazy amber color, small white head. Aroma of chocolate covered caramel. Taste is caramel syrup. Interesting.

Bottle: Wow, got this one in the summer of 2008 while visiting Boston and its still got some legs. Has a rich peaty background, slight campfire and charred wood, bit heaps of biscuity maltiness, and also some slight caramel and chocolate. I opened this thinking it was busted, but I am pleasantly surprised. It also has quite a bit of smoked character, almost like smoked salmon or something. Body could stand to be a bit heftier. Smooth finish, biscuit, peat, and some musty caramel notes. Better than I expected.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 johnnnniee (882) - Bedford, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 23, 2011
Review from notes, sampled 3/12/2008
Pours a deep dark brown with ruby highlights when shown to the light. Thin off white head that leaves its lace on the glass, Aroma comes through with some pine and some caramel and a hint of chocolate if I strain really hard. Taste is caramel malty. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for a scotch ale. Lightly carbonated. Overall a decent beer. I would have liked more body and more malt. Reminds me more of a strong bitter than a scotch ale.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Thorpe429 (3526) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - NOV 23, 2010
G: Poured into a dimpled stein.
A: Pours a thick, cola-brown with a very decent head and plenty of carbonation on top. The beer is almost opaque in the glass. Decent lacing.
S: Contrary to other reviewers, I’m getting a pretty good (and fairly strong) smell out of this one. Deep malts and a caramel character. Slight hops (wonder if there were more when this was first released?)
T: An initial hop bitterness (reminds me ever-so-slightly of Alpha King) and then fades into darker malts. Caramel flavors are present, as well as a little bit of nut.
M: A little thinner than what I would have expected. Also, not a ton of carbonation. Slightly creamy, though actually quite watery.
D: Overall, fairly decent drinkability, but nothing great. Mouthfeel isn’t quite right, and the taste isn’t as strong as I would like.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 SledgeJr (3579) - Omaha, Nebraska, USA - JAN 29, 2010
In the bottle from Wagner’s Liquor. Pours a ruby red brown with a medium to large dark beige head. Has a mild blackberry aroma. The flavor has chocolates but it’s not huge. The beer seems a bit bourbon like, especially at the finish. It’s nutty and mildly roasted. this is not thin but it is not thick or creamy either. Beautiful lacing. A good nutty chocolate roasty finish.
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 eaglefan538 (2726) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - OCT 23, 2009
Bottle shared by doulos31/goodgrief’s pop. The pour was copper in color with a lighter colored head. The aroma was lightly roasted dark malts, caramel, smoke, some grainy wood type notes. The flavor was off for a scottish ale, caramel, brown sugar, dark roasty elements, chocolate, earthy notes, off flavors, oxidized? Mouthfeel was light, somewhat astringent. Not a pleaser. Oh well.
