Volgon (2463), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Mar 17, 2008 Bomber: Pours a clear light ruby with a small off-white head, fresh malty aroma with some light fruits and caramel, medium bodied with mellow carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel, starts and ends lightly sweet with a crisp ending.
RIXbeer (102), USA Nov 28, 2008 Pours a light amber with a single finger of head. Doesn’t smell that good. Honestly it’s a stale smell like beer in a keg that should have been tapped a long time ago. Tastes like a very light scottish porter. very boring for a porter. It’s a little too bubbly. I could drink another one of these. But I wouldn’t want to. Not a fan. It’s ok at best. Homer321 (120), Rockledge, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 pours deep and rich ruby. smells earthy and slightly like chocolate malt. small khaki colored head with many small bubbles. very malty with noted of chocolate, cocoa, and a small amount of roastiness. background of coffee with high finishing gravity but not too sweet. large mouthfeel. slight notes of tea leaves. roastiness is accentuated with temperature leading to more coffee notes. mouthfeel is creamy. A very nice example of an 80 shilling that is very drinkable - just like BJCP guidelines read. I think this could benefit from a slightly harder brewing water to bring out some of the hops - but that is for my personal preference only Glouglouburp (2113), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 18, 2008 In short: A sweet candy-ish body and a good amount of herbal tea-ish hops. Quite drinkable beer.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed two weeks after purchase
The look: Clear dark ruby body topped by a small beige head
In long: Crisp liquorice candy, caramel, some toffee and a mix bag of hard candies. Hoping has a strong herbal aromatic fruit flavoured tea that coincidently reminded me a lot of the AleSmith Anvil ESB that I had 10 minutes before. Overall the beer is quite earthy and also has a strong woody character. Not much bitterness to speak of, just a herbal tea-like finish. Still the beer felt well balanced and the initial sweet attack was dried off a lot by the herbal tea-like finish. Of the two Firth of Forth incarnations truly one is underrated and one is overrated, that beer is nice and I really never understood what was so great about Genesis.
DougShoemaker (2619), Toronto, Canada Sep 30, 2008 Aroma has brown sugar, lots of malt, mahogany, tiny tan head. Taste is fine malt, butterscotch mmmm. Sweet, almost crunchy, very drinkable. Quite good. Thanks Torontoblue. yankeefan21 (72), USA Sep 25, 2008 This pours a nice dark and rich amber with a finger tall beige head. It has an inviting smell of malt and caramel. There is very little carbonation in this easy sipping scotch ale. It feels smooth on the tongue with a bready dryness on the roof of the mouth. There is a very faint hint of bitter dark chocolate with a mostly cereal taste. This was quite good for what it is and I would feel comfortable recommending it to anyone that likes Scotch Ales.
