Commercial Description:
The combination of Scottish malts and American hops give this dark scotch style ale a malty, roasted character with caramel notes and a hint of chocolate. 100 bbl. series, session 22.

22 ounce bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (February 2008), consumed a bit below cellar temperature from a Samuel Smiths pint glass. Faintly hazy/translucent dark maple with a voluminous, soft and bubbly off-white head that recedes slowly and laces thickly....light roasty, chocolaty malts are alas somewhat capsized by a strong soapy character in the nose; this fades somewhat after a few minutes and an earthy touch comes in, but the detergent never disappears entirely....the body is earthy, lightly herbal, moderately sweet at the front but drying out considerably at the finish, no trace of hops, light caramelized malts -- and again, unfortunately, a soapiness that really kills it....low carbonation, slick and somewhat oily....fail.

Very much liked this brew. Depp tan color with a fair sized head. Smell was sweet from carmel but the hops also pushed through. Almost a fruit blossum oder to it. When first sipped it has the same flaor as the smell with a sweetness and hoppiness to it. What was realy impressive was that a second after that initial taste it lauches into a roasty chocolate malt. The after taste was finely seperated from the first tastes which created a very unique effect. The only drawback was a thin palate that seemed in contrass to the deep malt.

Courtesy of Gillard. Pours brilliant deep copper with thin off white head. The aroma is a mix of earthiness and caramelization and some faint esters. The taste begins with dates, prunes and moving into maltiness, earthiness and some caramel. It ends dry and with roasted malts. Lot of tasty flavors for a sessionable sized brew.

22oz Bottle: Brownish red w/ a small off-white head. Aroma when first poured is bigtime piney hops. After it settles a bit & warms you start to get some nice roasty caramel malts. Flavor is lightly roasted malts, caramel, a hint of milk chocolate & surprisingly lacking those hops I smelled right after the pour. Really smooth & enjoyable. Glad I grabbed this one.

650 ml. Copper-chestnut with a medium and lasting head. Aroma is cola and slight corn. Molasses, cola, slight apple, and roasted nut on the front, with some earthy leaf and smoked vegetable coming in shortly and finishing dryish. Medium body is mostly smooth and turns almost chalky-dry after a bit.
