This is not to be toyed with. Supposedly itís 7.2%? Iím not quite calling bullshit on that but I reckon the hops are hallucinogenic or otherwise adding to the alcohol buzz. One time I sunk a whole lot of this I ended up waist deep in the Pacific Ocean off New Brighton. No idea how I got there. One nasty wave and I could have drowned. Had to walk all the way back to Linwood too. No cab will take you when you smell like fish. Then there was that other time I found myself shirtless in the forest having scrawled indecipherable runes on myself in felt tip pen, carrying a sack of pine cones. That was an awful yet deeply spiritual experience. Anyway kids, drink responsibly.

Although itís on the sweet side, and could too with more hops, itís still a fair brew. It should be drunk well-chilled, though. Not the best effort of one of New Zealandís better breweries. I liked the simplicity of their former label better than their latest.

330ml green bottle bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty during the ĎNew Zealand food festivalí promotion.

Clear dull golden orange colour; Very thin head with residual soapy white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Good sticky lacing and active carbonation; Pungent and sweet smell of lager malt which can be smelt a foot away, plus raisin, sugar, hint of nuts, bread, dough, lemon and very strong raw grass; Strong sweet taste of light Pilsener malt, with pleasant light syrup, honey, light raisin, light flower petals, biscuits, light yeast, faint lemon, light bitter hops and thin grass; Mid to light body. Thin but slick palate; Mouth feel is initially like an Imperial Pils - Pilsener maltyness is kinda thin but has no adjunct at all, with full round sweetness of nice light syrup and a bit of honey. There is also some underlying nuttiness and light raisin taste, booze is well hidden, but overall itís very lager-ish, still very much an Imperial Pils with some extra dimensions of a Bock. Also quite biscuity and very low hops. Pretty interesting and tasty!... Hoppiness is strong raw grass in nose, light lemon and light grass in taste. Bitterness is very low in background, very Bock-like for a nicely sweet-and-faint-bitter finish; Slightly dry after taste, quite sweet to mouth.

Comments: This is an interesting hybrid of Imperial Pilsener and Heller Bock. Very much a strong lager at heart, with that strong and raw grass aroma which may be mistaken as light skunk. The Bock-ish sweetness, hidden booze, light nuts and low hops makes it very intriguing and quite enjoyable. Definitely worth trying if you see one!

(Draught) Average strong lager. Colour darkish yellow. I did expect the alcohol in the taste but it is not apparent. However the taste is pretty sweet, warming in the end.

They call it a Strong Lager made with Pilsner malt and New Zealand hops, so it sits in well with Imperial Pilsner but given the low hop rate I changed this to Heller Bock since that is what it most resembles, subjectively. There are no adjuncts used, which is why I changed it from Malt Liquor, which it had been listed as for who knows how long. This is sweet and full-bodied, relatively low-hopped, has a syrupy and goopy consistency. Lemon and pepper hop acids up front turn to more general spice mix in the finish, though the hop acids make the "spice" character more evident, but itís much more malt-driven giving off an aroma and flavor reminiscent of sweet biscuits with a softer hint of corn syrup. A smidgen of ethanol fumes in the nose suggesting the presence of fusels.

The head is medum, the body gold. It smells malty, intensive, sweet, bit alcoholic. The taste is maltaromatic, bit alcoholic bit bitter, flowery.

They call this the nectar of the gods, the perfect drop, the holy ale, but to me this is the shit that made me into the man i am today! No matter where ya at, da party, da park, da pub this shit is like 6ft of bullet proof armor in a bottle! No need for mates when hanging with Mr nga nga! and there is no Nga bros when i bust out the flagons of de old GOLD! Got me through my engineering degree and most of the bullshit highschool, BLOODY clasic. Encourage everyone to give it a go, serious drinkers and underagers. Although its not as potent as in the old days (use to be 8-14% depending on the batch) and even though you canít order them in kegs no more. Itís worth the memmories! If only i could remember half of them HaHa!

Never understood the fascination with this beer. It is high in alc and does not hide it well. Sweet and thin, with little interest in the back palate.
