DuffMan (2139), Calgary, Alberta, Canada Oct 24, 2008 GABF 2008. well, this one is definitely not going to appeal to everybody, but I quite liked it. Near black, butterscotch and vanilla aroma. The palate is certainly sweet, but it is not one-dimensional as feared from the aroma: in addition to the butterscotch, there is coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Somehow these flavours remain in balance with the malts.Finish is dry, which helps offset the sweeter profile of this beer. holdenn (1199), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 4, 2008 Well with not too much else that interesting, I was intrigued by this one. Pours a clear brown with orange hints and a off white head that fades to a ring. Nose. The nose. Seriously one of the weirdest aromas I’ve come into contact with. Butterscotch sunday. 100% butterscotch sunday, and not like, "ooh I could see that." But more like the people in the booth next to us probably assumed we ordered a butterscotch sunday. Pure toffee/caramel/vanilla (butterscotch) and cream. The taste isn’t quite extreme, because I’m sure after two sips that would be enough. Pale malts are more balanced with the butterscotch flavorings. The finish is like a faded butterscotch candy. Odd, but not undrinkable. I think they should get a touch of credit for doing what they set out to do, because they accomplished that. ... just what they did, was strange. Cornfield (4412), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Dec 20, 2007 This has a dark reddish brown body with a firm beige head. The aroma is butterscotch, smellable from yards away. Tastes better, a light toasted malt added to the flavor along with the smallest hint of chocolate towarrds the finish. This is a head scratcher, but I s’pose I found it enjoyable in an odd sort of way.

Harrisons Brewing Company, Orland Park, IL
gws57 (1003), Saint Charles, Illinois, USA Dec 18, 2007 Had this one on draught at the brewpub in Orland Park. Clear, dark ruby red pour with a thick, foamy tan head, heavy on the butterscotch in the nose with some vanilla and mariscino cherry, the sweetness of malt and Werther’s Original quickly fades to a nice, balanced bitterness. Nuanced, at least more nuanced than the nose would suggest. Very quaffable. Soft finish. Very good! frankenkitty (1834), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Jan 10, 2006 Well... it’s "brown" and it’s an ale, so I guess that makes it a "brown ale"... although I wish butterscotch were a fruit so you could classify this as a fruit beer with all the other brewpub offerings that add sugary, syrupy additives to their seasonals.

Served as a dark copper/mahogany with a ring, the aroma that came off was big, sweet, heavy butterscotch and peanut brittle. The taste was of a candied cream soda and seemed syrupy to start, but evened out due to heavy carbonation & revealed some spiciness. A bit cloying, but it was actually better than those boring fruit beers.
