Robinsons purchased Hartleys Brewery, Ulverston on the 26th July 1982, adding 56 public houses to the existing Robinsons estate. Hartleys Brewery can be traced back to the middle of the 18th Century with XB as a recipe first brewed by Hartleys head brewer Eric Simpson in 1949.
Although the brewing of the Hartley’s brands was relocated to Robinsons Unicorn Brewery, XB is still to the original Hartley’s recipe. The old Hartley’s brewing equipment is still in use at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham.
XB has become a traditional part of life in this beautiful part of the world. Cask conditioned to the time – horned manner, it is famed for its rich body and is a smooth bitter ale with a subtle tang of malt.

Cask at the Benjamin Huntsman, 20/05/16. Clear golden copper with a decent off White head. Nose is bready malts, biscuit, light spice, caramel. Taste comprises toffee apple, straw, earthy, twiggy essence. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close with a bitter edge. Whelming bitter ... looks and feels good but lacks at the business end.

Cask in the New Inn in Bowness on Windermere. Amberwith a foamy cream head. No aroma. Light nutty malt and citrus taste. Uber bland and watery. A struggle to finish. Dreadful.

On cask at Ship Inn, Coniston - Uninspiring bog standard bitter, clear amber, no head. Taste and nose of stale hops. Not pretty and a bit of a lowlight.

Labelled as Robinson’s Roadrunner for charity purposes, this copper coloured ale maintaining a decent head has a slightly sweet aroma. Easy to drink there’s a small sweetness although quite a thin body to it. Session ale stuff with a low to medium bitterness.
