COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
Robinsons purchased Hartleys Brewery, Ulverston on the 26th July 1982, adding 56 public houses to the existing Robinsons estate. Hartleys Brewery can be traced back to the middle of the 18th Century with XB as a recipe first brewed by Hartleys head brewer Eric Simpson in 1949.
Although the brewing of the Hartley’s brands was relocated to Robinsons Unicorn Brewery, XB is still to the original Hartley’s recipe. The old Hartley’s brewing equipment is still in use at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham.
XB has become a traditional part of life in this beautiful part of the world. Cask conditioned to the time – horned manner, it is famed for its rich body and is a smooth bitter ale with a subtle tang of malt.

Golden bitter with the typical Robinsons flavour, a little too similar to other Robinsons brews

Cask at The Black Horse, Preston. pours clear gold, thick white head. Light malt aromas, some biscuit and generic fruit. Taste is light sweet, light bitter. Finishes a bit thin, but OK.

This is one of my favourite beers, a very smooth creamy head, with a slight tang of malt and a smooth bitter finish

Labelled as Robinson’s Roadrunner for charity purposes, this copper coloured ale maintaining a decent head has a slightly sweet aroma. Easy to drink there’s a small sweetness although quite a thin body to it. Session ale stuff with a low to medium bitterness.

Cask. Slightly frosty rust gold with a thin white head. Nose of sweet malt and a slight tropical fruit. Lightly malty and dry in the mouth, with a little saltiness.

Cask at the Eagle, Cambridge. Pours clear gold with a small, bubbly white froth. Basic dry pale malt nose, some dry grass. Light sweet flavour with dry and bready malts, some toasty sugars, mild twigs, hints of melon. Light bodied with fine, prickly carbonation. Modestly sweet finish with dry and grainy bread, hints of dry toffee, light leafy bitterness. Simple but fine.

Cask (Portland Arrms, Cambridge) as "Hartleys Cumbrian XB"
Sweet fruity aroma, melon, some very ripe dark berry maybe - and something "pink". Soft palate, gentle carbonation. Very very simple, but a real "glider". Gentle sweet malts in the taste, finish mostly the same. Maybe a little watery.

No I don’t think so. Very toasted woody flavour just came over like paper/cardboard that had been though a photocopier.

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in June 1991. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear amber in colour with a thin white head. Slight note of toffee in the short aroma. Thin oily mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a digestive biscuit base with soft caramel flavours. Earthy note to the dry hop resins in the short metallic aftertaste. Finish is weak but malty with sweet overtones. An ok session bitter which vaguely reminded me of Belhaven 70/.

Medium gold with a thin light head. Tart citrus with an apple feel. Smell of apple juice, maybe some plum smell. Thin oily body. Refreshing juice. Light bitter taste with a sweet finish.
