A very dark beer, as unique as the tradition that created it. Choice aromatic hops, black malt and crystal-clear mountain spring water give this dark beer its distinctive, nutty flavour. The time-tested historic recipe, the classic brewing method and the secret of just enough extra hops make Hartmann’s Erbschänk 1550 a satisfying full-bodied beer.

Pours out of the bottle in a deep black colour with low head and medium body. Aroma of chimney and malt. Taste of malt, chimney, woods, leaves, smoke and caramel. Too smokey for me.

Dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet malty and roasted malt. Flavor is medium sweet and light bitter. Sweetish finish. Lacks some of the dryness I usually associate with schwarzbier. 030710

Hier stimmt definitiv was nicht.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white to light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium to dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (popcorn, roasted grain, chocolate milk), with a note of butter. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky, slightly unclean. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Ugh, so bad. And so disappointing, since I’d had great experiences with the Felsentrunk twice back in 2011. But this and especially the Maerzen were loaded with diacetyl. Terrible malt character, and lots of butter. Extremely unpleasant. So much for visiting this brewery now, doggone it.
