wunderbier (1267), Tampere, Rovaniemi over summer, Finland Mar 28, 2008 Deep brown hue with a medium, khaki and frothy head. Requires significant warmth to open up beyond a simple roasty aroma. Even after that the aroma still seems rather delicate overall. Mainly the aromatics are split between dark chocolate and rich coffee with an overall feeling of being slightly sugary sweet, almost caramelized. Flavour is somewhat dull with a simple sugar sweetness and fails to deliver on the promise of chocolate and roast. Salty finish is lengthy. Watery texture, medium bodied, average carbonation. 44cl can, bbe 03/2008.
mikkopen (77), Oulu, Finland Jun 27, 2008 440 ml can (Hartwall classic porter). Dark reddish brown colour. The head is tan, cremy and decent-sized. Sweet aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. Roasted malts and coffee in the flavour. Dry finish. A bit thin and watery but one of the best Finnish beers I’ve tasted in a while, nevertheless. janir (119), Oulu, Finland Jun 26, 2008 Deep ruby brown color. Beige head is creamy and thick. Roasty and slightly sweet malty is also dry. Flavor is roasty malty and much metallic. Light-bodied and carbonated palate. taunusmies (217), Finland May 31, 2008 Pours dark brown with a generous head. Malty, bready and roasty aroma with coffee and dark chocolate. Too watery and thin body as a porter. berkshire_john (958), Bracknell, Berkshire, England Apr 22, 2008 44cl can of Hartwall 1836 Classic Porter. Dark reddish brown with a thick beige head; extremely malty aroma, with no trace of any roast; very thin, sweet malt flavours, not really a porter; but redeemed by some dry chocolate on the finish. tlind2 (153), Helsinki, Finland Apr 9, 2008 Updated: Jul 8, 2008An uninteresting, watery beer, which barely earns the classification "porter". More reminiscent of a mass-produced lager with added food-coloring, though some chocolaty characteristics try to redeem the whole.
Edit: earlier review was based on a 500 ml bottle. The 440 ml can seemed somewhat more robust, but still fairly weak for a porter. Noticed more sweetness this time around as well. Rating adjusted (2 -> 2.5), still far from a great porter.
